CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION

a. Background
Laying hens are adult chickens that are kept specifically for their eggs. Agribusiness
development of laying hens in North Sumatra, precisely in Medan City, has grown rapidly
and has met / fulfilled the needs of surrounding communities in the area. Laying hens (layers)
are chickens intended for egg production. Laying hens start production when they reach the
age of 22 weeks.
In general, the reproductive system of the female consists of the ovary and ductal ducts
(channels). The system not only accepts eggs that are ovulated by the ovary and carries eggs
ovulated by the ovary and carries them to the implantation site (oviduct) but also receives
sperm and carries fertilization.
In most poultry, only the left ovary is functional, the right ovary is rundimenter. At the
time of embryo, the right ovary is found and macroscopically can still be seen until a few
days after hatching. If the functional left ovary is removed or removed by the surgical process
or damaged by disease, the right rudimenter enlarges and functions. If the ovary is taken at
an old age, then rudimentary develops into a functional ovary.
b. Research purposes
This study aims to determine the function of rudimentary in female laying hens (Galus- galus
domesticus) and to find out the reason why the right ovary has a rundimenter but the left
ovary works functionally.
c. Urgency of Research

The importance of this research is to find out the ovarian activity of laying hens and
their forms of manipulation. And the rudimentary process occurs so as to form eggs in the
reproductive system of the hens.

d. Targeted Findings
Ovaries in poultry are also called follicles. The female gamete cell in the chicken is
only from one ovary on the left, while the right side undergoes shrinkage which occurs after
the chicken hatches. This occurs because of its relationship with the hormonal steroid sexual
mechanism that interferes in it and is related to the volume and ability to accommodate
reproductive organs in the abdominal capity.
In adult laying hens, this only remains as remnants of tissue which can only be seen
macroscopically. If the functional left ovary is removed or removed by the surgical process or
damaged by disease, the right rudiment becomes enlarged and becomes functional.
