STAGING & THEME

 What is STAGING ?
 Staging is the position of the acting
area in relation to the audience.

The acting area is the part of the

available space occupied by the set
and used by the actors when acting.
 Staging can include such things as
positions of actors on stage (often
referred to as blocking), their gestures
and movements (stage business), the
scenic background, the props and
costumes, lighting and sound effects,
 What is Theme ?
Theme refers to the meaning of the play. Theme is
the main idea or lesson to be learned from the play.
The play’s theme is its message, its central concern,
the controlling idea or central insight.
It is not a simple thing to decide what the play’s
theme is . (Many plays contain several rather than
one single theme ). A theme can be :
1. A revelation of human character
2. May be stated briefly or at great length
3. A theme is not the “moral” of the story
