This document describes a 1st grade science lesson plan that uses a classroom blog and website creation tool. The lesson addresses science and technology standards about weather and seasons. Students will listen to an audio file on the classroom blog over the weekend to prepare for a lesson on seasons. On Monday, students will bring in an item related to fall and discuss weather and why seasons change. They will then split into groups to research and present on one season through a PowerPoint, audio file, or iMovie. With parent permission, the presentations will be posted to the classroom blog for parents and further student review. The technology allows the teacher to provide information outside of class and for students to conduct research.

This lesson is great for auditory, visual, and kinesthetic learners. The audio file on my blog allows students to hear my voice to prepare them for the upcoming lesson, but also provides them with a transcript for those who prefer to read. For the kinesthetic learners, bringing in something that reminds them of Fall will be great for them! Lesson idea implementation: Once the students have listened to my audio file over the weekend, they will bring in an item that reminds them of Fall on Monday. During science time, the students will bring out their items and place them at the front of the room. The students will explain why they brought their item and the teacher will lead the class into a discussion about weather and why we have seasons. This will begin a week-long research project to teach students how to research and how to work as a group to create a product. The entire class will be split into four groups, one for each season. We will take a trip to the library and everyone will find a book on the season they were assigned. Over the next week, students will create a PowerPoint presentation, mp3 file, or iMovie about their season to present to the class on Friday. Students will be assessed on how well they work together through the week and whether or not their presentation meets the criteria the teacher has provided for them. With parent permission, each group’s presentation will be posted to the classroom blog for parents to see at home and for students to review! Importance of technology: Edublogs allowed me to give information to the class when they were not in the classroom. This is a great way to prepare students for the upcoming lessons and not have to wait until Monday to tell them to bring in a Fall item. This lesson could be completed without the use of technology, but the technology allows students to branch out and use all of their resources. Inspiration (optional): I looked at the GA standards for inspiration for my lesson! Internet Safety and Student Privacy: Since I have control of what is posted on my classroom blog, I am able to provide students with only safe, approved content. Students only need to use my blog and the library books for this lesson, no outside Summer 2017_SJB Classroom Blog and Website Creation Tools Internet sources are needed. However, if outside Internet sources are needed for other lessons, I will provide those direct links for students to find on my blog and not through their own browsing. Before posting students’ final presentations on the blog, I will make sure to have parent consent in order to maximize their child’s safety and identity. Reflective Practice: I believe this lesson is critical for student learning because it is teaching them how to conduct research using all of their resources. I designed this lesson around seasons and weather because that is the first science standard the students will address during the school year and it is a great opportunity to introduce them to the classroom blog and research.
