ABSTRACT
Chronic wounds left untreated without proper medication is common among
the people from the far-flung areas. Due to the lack of proper medication to treat the
wound immediately, people tend to deal with it using only herbal plants smeared on
the wounded body part. This common problem poses a threat to the well-being of
people as it could lead to more severe complications. With this, this study had been
conducted to ascertain the antibacterial property and wound healing activity of Sea
Urchin (Echinodea) species flesh extract on Sprague Dawley rats. This study utilized
a qualitative experimental method of research consisting of three (3) treatments with
five (5) replicates to evaluate the effectiveness of the flesh extract from the different
species within eight (8) days duration of the study. The Kirby-Bauer disk diffusion
assay had been used to detect the antibacterial activity of Sea Urchin species. Data
obtained were expressed on mean standard deviation and Analysis of Variance was
used to analyze the results. Results showed that there is a significant difference
between E. lucunter ointment and the positive and negative controls in decreasing
wound size. The peak of the wound healing activity took place on the sixth day.
Therefore, E. lucunter can be an alternative medicine in wound healing.
