Future of the Cheshire campus
Manchester Metropolitan University has confirmed that it will
be closing its Cheshire campus in the summer of 2019.

We are still pleased to receive applications for the courses

detailed in this brochure, starting in 2018 on the Cheshire
campus. Courses will only be delivered on campus until
summer 2019, after this date teaching and research supervision
will take place in Manchester. Our students and staff will be
supported during this period to ensure that the impact on your
studies is minimal.

A Knowledge Transfer Partnership is
a long-standing government scheme
that assists companies to develop

They involve an organisation and a

I first came to Manchester Metropolitan University in

2008 to study Exercise and Sport Science at
undergraduate level, a course that resonated with
me such that I stayed to complete an MSc in
Exercise Physiology. During my MSc, my hard work
and dedication was recognised and I was appointed
as a research assistant to Dr Alun Williams and the
Sports Genomics Laboratory, funded by Institute for
Performance Research. I have now gone onto a Post
Doctorial Research role at University College Dublin.

In my opinion, the research academics based in

Exercise and Sport Science at Manchester
Metropolitan University are not just elite in their own
fields, published in top academic journals, but are
also published in other related fields, showing their

You would normally have a good UK undergraduate honours
degree preferably in a related field (eg sport, education, history,
sociology). For this unique Masters programme, we also
encourage applications from mature students, with a wealth of
experience of historical scholarship and an interest in exploring
the importance of the past with the capacity to work at
Master’s level.
The course
The intellectually challenging and discipline-focused programme
prepares students for a career in sports history, education and
socio-cultural studies at an advanced level.
Taught by leading researchers within the field of sports history,
an interdisciplinary perspective is encouraged to explore the past.
The course provides a focus for research into nineteenth and
twentieth century sport and leisure, and is actively engaged
in employing all historical approaches, including oral history,
biography, and prosopography, to uncover the individual and
collective lives of the men and women involved in sporting and
leisure activities.

Entry requirements
An overview of the minimum entry
requirements for our programmes.
In individual areas of study, you may
be required to achieve grades higher
than the minimum requirements. It is
important to read the individual course
entry for the course you wish to apply
for, which gives details of the typical
entry requirements for that course. In
particular, courses which lead to an
award from a professional body may
have specific entry requirements that are
set by that professional body. Satisfying
the typical entry requirements may not,
however, guarantee the offer of a place.
Applications are considered on their
own merit and in competition with
others, with account being taken of
examination results already achieved,
predicted grades in forthcoming
examinations, research project
proposals, personal statements and
academic references. In some cases,
work experience or success in other
fields may be accepted as an equivalent
to formal qualifications.
Recognition of Prior Learning
We welcome applications to our
postgraduate courses from students
who have existing postgraduate or
professional qualifications. We may be
able to credit some of your existing
qualifications and give you exemption
from some of the taught units for your
taught course, which means that you
would not have to study all the units for

PhD
To apply for a PhD, you should have a
UK Bachelors degree at 2:1 or higher or
a Masters degree (or equivalent from
an overseas institution), in a discipline
which is appropriate to the proposed

do not meet these criteria but have had
appropriate research or professional
experience at postgraduate level which
has resulted in published work, written

PhD by Published Work and PhD
by Professional Practice
The University offers two routes
for PhD by Published Work as well
as a Professional Practice option.
These routes provide an alternative
for candidates who have acquired
substantial experience in a working
research environment, as a result of
which a number of publications have
been produced. Only published work
that is available and accessible in
the public domain will be eligible
for consideration.
A PhD by Professional Practice is
more suited to candidates who are
established professionals as well as
suitably qualified recent postgraduates
who are engaged in professional
practice in any discipline.
Professional Doctorate
Admission to a professional doctorate
programme would normally require a
good honours degree (or equivalent)
and a Masters degree in a relevant
subject area (usually within a five year
period prior to entry) or evidence of
having written at that standard, and
a minimum of four years working in a
professional role.
