Content Standard(s): 3.0A.8 Solve two-step word problems using the four
operations. Represent these problems using equations with a letter standing for
the unknown quantity. Assess the reasonableness of answers using mental
computation and estimation strategies including rounding.

Terminal Objective: Students should be able to find key words in word problems
in any of the four operations: addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.

Objective: Students will learn to identify key words in word problems in order to
find the solution.

Materials: Flashcards, markers, Sluggers’ Car Wash, paper money, PowerPoint

Motivational activity: Teacher will ask the class to solve an authentic word
problem in pairs: “There are __ students in this classroom, I need to pass out
four index cards per student. How many index cards do I need?” Teacher(s)
should be circulating the room ensuring that students are multiplying the number
of students by four index cards. Student volunteer will come up to the board to
write the mathematical equation that was used to solve the problem.
Input: Teacher will show the class the word problem on poster board and ask
students which specific word in the problem let them know that they needed to
multiply the two numbers.

Main lesson activity: Students will create four flashcards, one for each of the
four mathematical operations. On the blank side of each card, they should write a
symbol (+,-,x,÷) and on the opposite side list the key words associated with that
operation. Students will use flashcards to participate with the word problems the
teacher presents. Worksheet will be passed out and students will solve and
review the first problem. The worksheet should be completed as homework.
Closing activity: Teacher will close the lesson by reading Sluggers’ Car Wash
to class and students will participate by answering questions.
