Tutorial 6
1. Equipment ratings for the four bus power system shown in Figure 1 are as
follows:
A three-phase short circuit occurs at bus 1, where the prefault voltage is 525 kV.
Prefault load current is neglected.
(a) Draw the reactance diagram in per-unit on 1000 MVA, 20 kV, base in the zone of
generator G3.
(b) Determine the Thevenin equivalent impedance at the fault
(c) Determine the subtransient fault current in per-unit and in kA r.m.s.
(d) Determine contributions to the fault from generator G1 and from line 1–2.
[answer: (b) ZTh = j0.2670 p.u.; (c) IF = –j3.933 p.u.= 4.541 kA; (d) Ig = –j1.641 p.u,
= 1.896 kA; Iline 1-2 = –j2.292 p.u. = 2.647 kA]

3. Equipment ratings for the five bus power system shown in Figure 2 are as
follows:
A three-phase short circuit occurs at bus 5, where the prefault voltage is 15 kV.
Prefault load current is neglected.
(a) Draw the reactance diagram in per-unit on 100 MVA, 15 kV, base in the zone of
generator G2.
(b) Determine the Thevenin equivalent impedance at the fault
(c) Determine the subtransient fault current in per-unit and in kA r.m.s.
(d) Determine contributions to the fault from generator G2 and from transformer T2.
[answer: (b) ZTh = j0.1733 p.u.; (c) IF = –j5.772 p.u.= 22.21 kA; (d) Ig2 = –j5 p.u,

6. A three-phase short circuit occurs at the generator (bus 1) for the system shown in
Figure 4. Neglecting prefault currents and assuming that the generator is operating
at its rated voltage, determine the subtransient fault current. Choose base values of
