Argumentative Essay

This argumentative essay was done as an assignment during my AP English class in my

junior year. In this assignment, what was being asked was if “Disobedience” was not only a trait

but also if it is something that has impacted our social progress. This assignment is an

argumentative artifact due to the prompt asking if disobedience either promoted social progress

being a valuable trait or disobedience does not promote social progress. Evidence that will

determine this is argumentative would be that there is a counter-argument involved meaning to

explain what both sides might either say about disobedience and something they might disagree

or agree about it.

The SLO that I met while establishing this assignment was to be a Critical Thinker.

Evidence that shows this would be in where I provide historical facts that determined when

people throughout and during the war would be disobedient such as the Civil Rights Movement

in the 1960s in regards to sit-ins. I was also a critical thinker due to discussing the counterclaim

thoroughly with specific examples. In the counterclaim, I included a different perspective of

what someone may think about disobedience being a harmful trait stymies social progress

bringing in dangerous consequences. Another example of being a critical thinker in this

assignment is providing examples of how disobedience helped improve society and helped solve

life-long problems.
This assignment helped me work with the SLO in being a critical thinker by thinking

thoroughly in the assignment by looking up information in regards about the war that have

provided examples of how disobedience made an impact in social progress. Focusing on this

skill, I can further improve by perhaps providing more common sense and my own personal

knowledge to make the prompt more credible rather than getting a source from the internet that

may be incorrect or false. The skill in being a Critical Thinker can be used in the future for when

I go to college and have assignments that may need for you to provide reasoning and examples

of historical problems or anything that needs to be provided with evidence and research.
