ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

We would like to express our deepest appreciation to all those who

provided us the possibility to complete this report. A special gratitude
we give to our professor Dr. Rajiv Gupta, who helped us to coordinate
our project.

We would also like to thank Mr. Nayan Gupta for his valuable
guidance throughout the project. We both express our heartfelt
gratitude to Mr. Farhan for guiding us during the induction program
and giving exposure to all the facilities at BITS related to this. This
journey has been great so far and we thank the almighty to provide us
this golden opportunity.
INTRODUCTION

In today’s age of global warming and the resulting climate change

problems, the ever growing human needs have severely affected
the environment and the ecosystem, leading to a major resource
crisis all across the planet. The overall quality of life all across the
world have certainly improved, but it has been at a great expense
of our Nature.

The constant expansion of human occupied area has led to

constant deforestation and plundering of natural resources for raw
materials. It may be news to the uninformed that the construction
industry, together with the materials industries that support it, is
one of the major global consumers of natural resources, both
physical and biological.

In response to these impacts, there is growing consensus among

organizations committed to environmental performance targets
that appropriate strategies and actions are needed to make
building activities more sustainable.
GRIHA Rating System

 GRIHA is an acronym for Green Rating for Integrated Habitat

Assessment. Buildings interact with the environment in various
ways. Throughout their life cycles, from construction to
operation and then demolition, they consume resources in the
form of energy, water, materials, etc. and emit wastes either
directly in the form of municipal wastes or indirectly as
emissions from electricity generation.

 GRIHA attempts to minimize a building’s resource

consumption, waste generation, and overall ecological impact to
within certain nationally acceptable limits /benchmarks.

 It attempts to quantify aspects such as energy consumption,

waste generation, renewable energy adoption, etc. so as to
manage, control and reduce the same to the best possible extent.

 It was developed by TERI (The Energy and Resource Institute)

in 2000, and endorsed as the National Rating system for green
buildings by MNRE (Ministry of New and Renewable Energy)
in 2007.
 Developed particularly for non-AC spaces or partially AC
buildings.
 Integrates all relevant Indian Codes (like Energy Conservation
Building Code) and Standards to act as tools for
implementation.
 It aims to minimize resource consumption, waste generation and
overall ecological impact of building on environment.
The Five “R” Policy
• Refuse – To blindly adopt international trends, materials,
technologies, products, etc. Especially in areas where local
substitutes/equivalents are available.
• Reduce – The dependence on high energy products, systems,
etc.
• Reuse – Materials, products, traditional technologies, so as to
reduce the costs incurred in designing buildings as well as in
operating them.
• Recycle – All possible wastes generated from the building site,
during construction, operation and demolition.
• Reinvent – Engineering systems, designs, and practices such
that India creates global examples that the world can follow
rather than us following international examples.
Scoring Criteria of GRIHA
Rating our Building
The New Academic Building ((NAB) NAB) that has come up in what was
formerly the C-Lawns.
Lawns. The state of the art subterranean bbuilding has 5
academic departments, 24 classrooms, a minimini-auditorium,
auditorium, computer
labs, a creative media lab, a rotunda. The rotunda doubles up as an
open air theatre with a capacity of 1000 people. NAB is designed to
perfection, blending in with the already existing unique architecture
of the Pilani campus. Sprawling over several tens of thousands of
square foot in area, it maintains the axis that passes through the Clock
Tower and the Saraswati Temple.
We shall now perform GRIHA analysis on the New Academic Block
Building.
