Dear Rockingham County Advisory Board:

One of the great questions facing society today is whether some people, particularly children
and teens, are a lost cause. As the crime rate increases more and more children and teens are
being proscecuted as adults. I have spent time learning about juvenile justice, and I am
concerned by the number of young adults who will spend a large part of their lives in the prison
system.

My interest in the justice system has lead me to ponder the question of whether parenting style
affects the potential of the child. Does parenting style create children who are more likely to
encounter issues with law enforcement or children who are more likely to be productive citizens.
Can children whose parents use a negative style of parenting become productive citizens? If
these children can, in fact, be salvaged, how is that to be done? Is the current system helping
or harming juveniles who find themselves in the court system.

For my product I plan to volunteer time working with at-risk students. This is a big challenge for
me because I deal with social anxiety and this is really stepping out of my comfort zone. I am
looking for someone who works with at-risk students on a regular basis. I would like to work
with either Mrs. Attaway or Deputy Lingle. I picked these individuals because they both speed
time with at risk kids and I trust them.

Plagiarism is the act of copying someone else’s work and claiming it as your own. This is a
form of stealing, and it is not ethical. I believe that it is important to be ethical because is shows
what kind of person you are.
