Platform Engineer
JOB DESCRIPTION:

We're looking for brilliant engineers to join our core platform team. The core platform team is
responsible for creating tools to implement and operate large distributed systems. Our ultimate
goal is to reduce the friction in transforming specifications to executable artifacts.
Tenets

Functional programming: we believe that the functional programming paradigm empowers us

to write correct, maintainable and elegant code. As a result, we spend less time fixing bugs and
more time creating value for the organization.
Distributed systems: we appreciate the challenges of distributed systems and strive to provide
a platform that tames these challenges in a principled manner. As a result, our systems can
meet our scaling requirements on demand.
Technical excellence: we believe that an engineer best serves her or his role by concentrating
on technical excellence. As such, we support engineers in harnessing their passion for
technology, continuing their growth and cultivating their creative minds.
Being nice: we believe that none of the above matters if you're not being nice. We encourage
people to be empathetic, feel safe to take risks and to above all else, exude kindness to your
fellow colleagues.

What we're working on

Next-generation data store: the distributed data store pendulum is swinging back from one
extreme promulgated by the NoSQL movement, long on scale and short on safety, back to
providing reasonable guarantees to the application developer. With an eye toward
geo-distribution, we're adding another dimension to the consistency controls provided by
Dynamo-style stores, to make explicit the differences in latency between LAN and WAN.

Demac Media - The Ultimate Hiring Guide to 10x Your eCommerce Business
Page 85 of 126
Event flow monitoring: the event flow monitoring component enables us to operate a
distributed system by tracing flows of events through networks of services. These traces are
required to formulate an accurate picture of system states, which are particularly important when
debugging. The monitoring component must be low-overhead, transparent to the application,
and support the capture of complex flows across streams of events.
Building blocks: while functional programming elevates the level of abstraction beyond the
imperative paradigm, much remains to be desired in terms of building blocks for distributed
systems. Our goal is to provide an expressive language to the application developer, which
creates new semantic levels rather than simply hiding (and leaking) complexity. We believe that
the combination of functional programming, static type systems and appreciation of distributed
computing can help us reach that goal.

QUALIFICATIONS:

● In-depth understanding and experience with distributed systems.

● Functional programming experience preferred, but not required.
● Appreciation of simplicity.
● Smart and gets things done.
TECHNOLOGY:

● Language: F# (we will train you!)

● Platform: Azure (Windows and Linux)
