Math Geometry Solid Shapes Lesson Plan
Lesson Overview

During this lesson, students will expand on their knowledge of geometric solid shapes. They will explore the
shapes using hands-on manipulatives, engaging problems, and interactive activities. They will relate the
concepts of vertices, faces, and edges to each shape, which they will name and describe. They will compare
and contrast plane shapes with solid geometric shapes.
Standards
State Curriculum Standards met in this lesson:
2.13 The student will identify, describe, compare, and contrast plane and solid figures (circles/spheres,
squares/cubes, and rectangles/rectangular prisms).
Instructional Outcomes:
Determine similarities and differences between related plane and solid figures (circles/spheres,
squares/cubes, rectangles/rectangular prisms), using models and cutouts.
Trace faces of solid figures (cubes and rectangular prisms) to create the set of plane figures
related to the solid figure.
Identify and describe plane figures (circles, squares, and rectangles), according to their
characteristics (number of sides, vertices, and angles). Squares and rectangles have four right
angles.
Identify and describe solid figures (spheres, cubes, and rectangular prisms), according to the shape
of their faces, number of edges, and number of vertices, using models.
Compare and contrast plane and solid figures (circles/spheres, squares/cubes, and
rectangles/rectangular prisms) according to their characteristics (number and shape of their faces,
edges, vertices, and angles).
Essential Questions:
In what ways can you describe a sphere? Cube? Rectangular prism? Pyramid? Cylinder? Cone?
In what ways are these shapes alike?
In what ways are these shapes different?
Why might you need to be able to identify solid shapes?

Procedures
Lesson Set - Engage/Elicit:
Students will complete a review problem which is projected onto the smart board by writing the answers on
their dry erase boards. After allowing students to volunteer their answers and explanations, they will
experience a read aloud of Captain Invincible and the Space Shapes by Stuart J. Murphy. Stop at
appropriate points in the book to discuss the solid shapes.
Rationale:
“Just like we talked about plane shapes being everywhere around us, we see solid shapes all around us too.
Knowing the parts of the solid and plane shapes helps us to see how they are related, how they are alike,
and how they are different.”
Explore Phase
Students will complete a Building Blocks Handout using solid figures. One student at a time will choose a
figure and come to the front of the room. The student will describe the figure – how many edges, faces,
and vertices. The solid figure will be named and described on the handout.
Explain Phase
Students will gather at the carpet and will view and discuss Primary Target Vocabulary Pictures, reviewing
the cards from yesterday and learning the new cards for today (face, pyramid, sphere, cube, prism, cone).
Cards will be distributed to students and those who do not have cards will take turns coming to the front to
describe a card. The students will listen to the clues and decide who is holding the card being described.
Extend/Elaborate Phase
Students will play the 3D Shapes Bump Game #2. The game involves rolling a die and counting spaces. The
space the student lands on describes a square in the center which has a picture of a real-life object with
one of the solid figures. Students take turns to see who can have the most spots covered at the end of the
game.
For the Evaluate Phase, students will complete an Exit Ticket. They will choose a figure to describe –
faces, edges (sides), and vertices (corners). They will each use a marker and evaluate three of their peers
with a check mark if they are correct. *Ensure that all students have at least one check mark.
Assessment/Evaluation:
Students will be formatively assessed ongoing throughout the first phases of the lesson. Students will give
oral input and feedback will be given and determined based on the students’ input. By moving around the
room during the Extend/Elaborate phase, ongoing assessment will continue. Final evaluation will occur with
the Exit Ticket which includes peer evaluation.

Differentiated Instruction:
This lesson uses hands-on manipulatives and visual cards in order to encourage and accommodate tactile
learners. The use of a book integrates Language Arts. Allowing students to complete an Exit Ticket gives
choice in the evaluation. Technology will be used for any students in need of remediation or extension.
Assessment will be varied and ongoing.
