This document describes a lesson plan for a 2nd grade social studies class about the US presidency. Students will write down who they think the president and vice president are before class. The next day, their answers will be posted on a classroom blog for discussion. By using the blog, students can always access the information and the teacher can create graphs to understand what the class knows and see different answers. The lesson aims to introduce students to the presidency using an interactive pre-assessment activity on the classroom blog.

Lesson Idea Name: Presidency Content Area: Social Studies Grade Level(s): 2nd Grade Content Standard Addressed: SS2CG2 Identify the following elected officials of the executive branch and where they work: a. President
Technology Standard Addressed: 3-Knowledge Constructor
Selected Technology Tool: X Blogs ☐ Wiki ☐ Other: Website Creation Tool (list):
URL(s) to support the lesson (if applicable): Kerenreizis.edublogs.org/flipped-classroom
Universal Design for Learning (UDL): A transcript is provided for the audio file for those who are deaf or hard of hearing.
Lesson idea implementation: This is a flipped classroom activity. Students are tasked to write down who they believe the President and Vice President are. When the students come in to the class the next day, a longer discussion will be had on this topic.
This is the opposite of an exit ticket. As the students come in to the classroom, they will tape their answers on the board. The teacher will then read each answer and create a poll online to see which answers were the most popular. This lesson will not be very long and can be used as a pre-assessment to see where the students stand. Importance of technology: It is important to use the technology (blogs) as the students will always know where to find the information. If students were to write down the flipped classroom question, they could lose the piece of paper or just forget about it. When the answers are compiled online, many different graphs can be used to demonstrate the variety of answers. This can help the teacher understand what percent of the class knows the answers and helps the students see the different answers that their classmates used.
Inspiration (optional): N/A
Internet Safety and Student Privacy: I would alleviate any parental worries by sending them an email at the beginning of the year to explain the classroom blog. On the blog, the students will not be able to submit answers that will include their name, age, or location. I will have a poster in the classroom that discusses Internet Safety rules. This poster will be discussed with the students and then posted onto the blog.
Reflective Practice: This is an introductory lesson. After we discuss the President (using the President Trump Video) and the Vice President, and the rest of the standard, the students will be given a project to do. In the project, they will need to create a booklet describing America, and more specifically GA, to foreigners. This Summer 2017_SJB Classroom Blog and Website Creation Tools booklet will cover the President, the Governor of Atlanta, and the Mayor of the students’ city. I think this can get the students to think about how other people who do not live in America can view the country and how they can educate them.
