Plan and Design of Egg Container

1. Identify the problem and information you need to understand the

problem(look back to the first page of your packet for help):

The main problem is that the egg will probably break upon hitting the
ground, and I need to build a container that stops the egg from breaking. I
know that the egg will be dropped from a height of 3 meters.

2. Form a hypothesis based on how you will fix the problem presented in
this project. (IF I DO THIS THEN THIS WILL HAPPEN)

If I make a container that absorbs the impact of hitting the ground, the egg
should experience less force upon impact, reducing the likelihood that it
breaks.

3. Explore your solutions to the problem of the 3 collisions the egg will
sustain, what materials you will use to solve the problem?

During this project I plan to use only cardboard as my building material. I

plan to use circular structures on the outside to envelop the egg capsule.
These structures may cause the container to roll upon hitting the ground so
the egg can handle higher drops. I can also use small, paperlike cardboard
“shavings” to form a soft area for the egg.
5. List the steps of how to make your container :

1. Cut the parts out of cardboard: 4 circles, a large rectancle to make the egg
capsule, and small rectangles for connector pieces.
2. make 4 shallow cuts through the large rectangle so it can be folded into a
square prism. This will be the egg capsule.
3. Cut out rectangular holes in the center of each circle wide enough to fit
the newly-folded egg capsule.
4. Cut slots it the top and bottom of the egg capsule wide enough to fit the
connector pieces.
5. If necessary, place the egg inside the egg capsule.
6. Slide the connector pieces into their slots so that the egg is between
them.
7. Slide two circles into place on each side of the egg capsule.

6. List any changes to your container after a trial of dropping it?

The container worked very well; the egg and the yolk inside
remained intact. No foreseeable changes for the near future.
