Welcome Back!

Please come in and have a seat

in your table groups. Take out your Interactive
Notebook and something to write with.
Write in your Interactive Notebooks: What are some new countries on the 1918 map that are not on
the 1914 map? What empires were they a part of? Who gained land? Who lost it?
Warm up
In your groups, brainstorm - what do you think was the main
cause of World War I?

What happened to start the “Great War”?

How was this war different from previous wars?

Industrial Revolution -> Build up of
military power. U-Boats, flight, tanks,
machine gun, chemical weapons

Partnerships for protections

Triple Alliance: Germany, Aus-Hung, Italy
Triple Entente: France, Russia, Great
Britain
Nations seeking to create empires in
other regions. Gather raw materials
and resources = $$ (think back to
last week’s simulation.
People feel loyalty and devotion to
their country or culture. Acts of
demonstration to show their loyalty.
So how did this
seemingly smaller
conflict explode
into a “World
War”?

How did it become

a global conflict?
Entangling Alliances Simulation
If you are sitting in one of the seats with a nametag/country on it, you will be
playing the role of that nation in our simulation.

- If you do not want to play that role, please switch seats with somebody in
your group.

- As the lines are drawn between nations, please tape down the string on
your desk (or cut it if an alliance is broken!)

- If you are not in a seat with a nametag, please pay attention, contribute to
discussion, and help connect the lines as our simulation goes on. Draw lines
on your map as we go along, connecting nations with treaties.

Take a Look Around
Discuss in your groups:

- What alliances and relationships do you see forming

around the room?
- What could be dangerous about the situation that has
been set up in Europe? What do you think will happen?
- What is America doing during all of this? Why do you
think they’re doing that?
Brain Break
That was fun! Take a couple of minutes to stand up, stretch
your legs, and refresh.

Please try to help pick up pieces of string and nametags and

return them to Mr. G.

Any garbage (small string, tape, etc.) can go in the trash bin.

Please put the scissors and tape back at the supply station by
the door.

Thank you!
