Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

Engagement: The students will be engaged in watching the video, making observations, and recording their
findings.
Representation: The concepts will be represented in the video to give the students an overall idea of what
each change is. Then, the students will be able to see these changes represented in their everyday life.
Action and Expression: This activity allows students to be active and engaged through watching the video,
recording their observations, speaking to their classmates, and participating in a whole-class discussion.

Lesson idea implementation:

This lesson is a flipped classroom activity. This activity will have the students acquire background
knowledge before learning about the topic in class. On my classroom blog, there is an audio file that I have
posted with directions for this flipped classroom activity. The directions will lead the student to a video link
that explains the differences between chemical and physical changes. In the audio file, I prompt the students
to take notes from this video. They will identify major takeaways, examples, and definitions from the video.
This video is used simple as an overview for the content that the students will learn about i n class.
Once the students have watched the video, they will engage in an exploration activity. They are asked to
observe some chemical and physical changes that they see in their daily life. They will record their findings
and bring them to the next class meeting. The students will have time to talk to their classmates about what
they observed and if they think it is a chemical or physical change. Once this discussion has concluded, the
teacher will lead a whole-class discussion on the video. The students will share their notes from the video and
key things that they have learned. This discussion will serve as a transition into the lesson on chemical and
physical changes.

Importance of technology:
Technology plays a vital role in this activity as it is based at home through the computer. The students will be
using a video to obtain the information, which can be helpful by using visuals to represent the content.

Without the technology component, the students would have to rely on an article or textbook reading
assigned by the teacher. Technology helps to create a more engaging, comprehensible medium for this
information to be portrayed.

Internet Safety and Student Privacy:

There are often many reservations from parents involving technology use in education. Young children can be
exposed to many harmful contents through the internet, which can be a scary thought for the parents. There
are a few steps I plan to take to ease these risks and fears. First, I will advise the parents to work along side
their student as they complete the online assignments. This will ensure that the student is not on a site they
should not be on. This also assures the parent that the teacher is confident that their material is student-
friendly. Next, I will watch the video to ensure that it is appropriate for the students to watch. Lastly, I would
include the source of the content I am posting so that the parents can observe the site before allowing their
student to explore it.

Reflective Practice:
This activity plays an impact in both the students and the teacher. The students are provided with a resource,
the video, that they can use to acquire background information. When they go in to the next class, they will
already have some knowledge of the topic before the teacher begins their lesson which can make them feel
more comfortable and confident. They are also able to go back and use the video as a resource later if they
are having any confusions. As for the teacher, this is an excellent time-saver. The students are exploring the
content outside of the classroom so that they will have a general understanding when they come back the
next day for the lesson. Rather than taking class time to explain the background information, the students will
already be equipped with this knowledge so the teacher can move on with the lesson.
