Introduction to Pediatric Dentistry

Definition
Is an age defined specialty that provides both
primary and comprehensive preventive and
therapeutic oral health care for infants and children
through adolescence, including those with special
health care need.
Objectives
•Giving comfort, relieving pain, removing infection,
and restoring functions
•Develop a positive attitude and behavior
•Allaying fear and anxiety and modifying the child
behavior
•Promoting optimal oral health by prevention and
education
-by educating children and their parent
•Implement the principles of preventive dentistry
from birth
•Parental guidance and counseling regarding
different facets of preventive dentistry and
treatment modalities
•Early diagnosis of the disease and treatment
•Occlusal guidance and early treatment of
developing malocclusion
•Managing children with special needs (physically,
mentally and medically)

History taking end examination

K. Need comprehensive history taking in relaxed


conversation with child and his/her parent.
L. Case History should include
K. Personal detail; name, nickname, age, address,
telephone number, etc.
L. Presenting complaint; ask the patient first then
the parent to establish rapport. Include duration,
mode of onset, progression etc.
M. Social history; important in treatment planning
and to establish rapport.
N. Medical History; comprehensive medical history.
O. Dental History; previous dental experience and
behavior . Asess factor responsible for existing
oral health and impact on future oral health, eg
snacking.
Dental Charting and Notation
K. First dental visit from first teeth to erupt and no
later than 12 month.
L. Significance of first visit;

communication with child, desentisize and
motivation
