Maglev is a system of train transportation that uses two sets of magnets, one set to repel and
push the train up off the track, then another set to move the 'floating train' ahead at great speed.
Maglev means magnetic plus levitation. Any thing which may levitate (raise or float) by means
of a magnetic power is simply called as magnetic levitation. Motion of the maglev is purely
based on magnetism and magnetic fields. Magnetic fields are produced by powerful
electromagnets. Wheels eliminated from the train allowing it to essentially move in the air
without friction.

Levitation – the passing of the superconducting magnets throught levitation coil induces a
current in the coils and creates a magnetic field. This pushes the train upward so that it can
levitate 10 cm above the track. The train does not levitate until it reaches 80 km/h so it is
equipped with retractable wheels.
Propulsion – An alternating current is ran through electromagnet coils on the guide walls of the
guideway. This creates a magnetic field that attracts and repels the supercunducting magnets on
the train and prepels the train forward.
Lateral guidance – when one side of the train nears the side of the guideway, the
superconducting magnet induces a repulsive force so this keeps the train in the center

Electromagnetic suspension - The electromagnets on the train pull it up to the stators on the track
and levitate the train. Magnets on the side keep train from moving from side to side.
Electrodynamic suspension – The train is levitated by the repulsive and attractive force between
magnetic fields of the train and guideway. Magnetic field is located at the bottom of the train.
Inductrack – it is the same like a electrodynamic system but this system uses permanent magnets
rather than superconducting magnets.

The difference in speed between maglev and conventional trains relies completely on the usage
of wheels. Speed in conventional trains is limited because of the wheels,while maglev trains use
levitation which allows them for higher top speeds.
Maglev require insignificant guideway maintenance.Their electronic vehicle maintenance is
minimal.Railway used by conventional trains is subjected to wear and tear due to friction.
While maglev trains are unaffected by snow, rain or high wind, conventional trains may
encounter problems due to degradation of guideway caused by weather conditions.
Maglev train are more efficient due to lack of contanct between track and vehicle.
