What can Chaos Magik teach us about branding in the Public Real-
tions field?

n their 5th edition of K-Hole, an alternate brand consultancy, they announced the
newest trend was “Chaos Magic”. The transition from Normcore to Chaos Magic was
initiated in the fact that Normcore couldn’t explain the world around us anymore,
because getting full understandings of the truth was simply mundane. Climate change
is still occurring, political strife is still occurring, people are still feeling discontent and
anxiety for the future; it didn’t go away with thinking and learning. This lead to the
discovery that the world needs magic.

Magic gives us the power to manifest or sublimate, therefore we can create emo-
tions and states of being, and in the case of branding, perception of products. Public
Relations’ relationship with branding comes in their power to highlight and conceal infor-
mation to make products and brands more appealing. Learned perceptions through pat-
tern recognition is one aspect of the world of PR, but also the new connection of magical
thinking.

Unified belief in ideas ultimately gives ideas the power to exist, whether it can be
proven or not. This in a way hints that nothing actually exists and the only things that

exist are the ones we give the power to exist. K-Hole brings up the question of, “ … if you
believe something strongly enough, can you morph the individual into the collective?”
In a simplified form that is what PR tries to do with branding, making an concept that ap-
peals to the mass and create a unified understanding of a brand.

Chaos Magic takes the idea of cult of positive thinking and amplifies it by the tan-
gibility that creates change. Branding forces concepts onto consumers in the same way
Chaos Magic forces concepts into our own heads. The distinguishing factor between the
two is branding is interpersonal and chaos magic is intrapersonal. But taking the same
elements of Chaos Magic and making it interpersonal through branding is where public
relations is heading.
