COURSE GOAL:
For students to demonstrate proficiency in comprehending, evaluating, and responding to
college-level reading material (Institutional credit).
OBJECTIVES:
 Students will demonstrate the ability to use strategies to develop vocabulary.
 Students will demonstrate the ability to use strategies for comprehending texts.
 Students will demonstrate the ability to apply critical reading strategies to
construct meaning from text.

GRADING/EVALUATION:
Students will be evaluated on the following:
Assessment Paper 50 pts.
Homework Assignment #1 50 pts.
Homework Assignment #2 50 pts.
Midterm Exam 100 pts.
Novel Project 100 pts.
Reflective Paper 50 pts.
Final Exam 100 pts.
*The average of these grades will be the basis for students’ final grades. These scores
are to be interpreted as follows: 100 - 90/ A 89 - 80/ B 79-70/ C Below
70/F
*Students’ progress reports will be given before the midterm exam @ the 7th week of
class.
Class Withdrawal: Students are not permitted to drop developmental classes without
penalty. The last withdrawal day is Friday, March 20, 2009.

CLASS REQUIREMENTS:
 Students will be required to take a standard final exam.
 Students will be required to keep a folder that contains all notes, graded assignments,
and projects. The folder will be collected at the end of the semester.
 Students will be required to do online lab assignments.

Blackboard: The blackboard site for the class will contain class announcements, the
syllabus and attendance policy (in case you lose them), descriptions of homework
assignments, and links to online practice exercises for mandatory labs. Please check the
blackboard site regularly.

REQUIRED LAB PARTICIPATION:


Each student is required to complete online lab work to supplement classroom
instruction. If lab work is not completed or turned in, students will fail the course.
Students may work independently outside the class setting but they may not copy work
from another student. All lab work must be turned in on time.

ATTENDANCE: See Attendance Policy attached. Students who miss the indicated
number of absences will fail the course.

and present them to the course instructor to discuss any academic accommodations you

Assignments: These assignments combined make up the Novel Project.


Synthesis Journal: Create a synthesis journal to distinguish main characters. Use graphic
representations to show relationships or basic note taking to record important information
about each character. (50 points)

Critical/Evaluative Questions: Prepare 5 critical/evaluative questions that can be used for


class discussion. (5 points)

Vocabulary Words: Identify at least 10 vocabulary words. Indicate the page #s and define
the words using context. Words must be challenging and unfamiliar.

Metalearning Essay: 1 – 3 pp. Typed. Write about your experience reading the novel.
(35 points)
