INT. TRISTAN'S BEDROOM. AFTERNOON.
 
Tristan is lying face-up on his bed, with earphones plugged
into his mobile phone. He's listening to the podcast of the
lecture "Falling in Love" by Alan Watts. An expression of
deep admiration, interest and awe is painted upon his face.
He envies this man's wisdom.
 
PODCAST
You see, for all the life is an
act of faith and an act of gamble.
The moment you take a step, you do
so on an act of faith because you
don't really know that the floor's
not going to give under your feet.
The moment you take a journey,
what an act of faith. The moment
that you enter into any kind of
human undertaking in relationship,

Tristan gently removes his earphones and thinks about what
he just tuned into. There is a long pause.
 
TRISTAN
(whispers loudly to
himself)

Elias knocks twice on Tristan's bedroom door and enters.
 
TRISTAN (CONT'D)
Hey man.
 
ELIAS
What are you doing?
 
TRISTAN
I was just listening to this
podcast.
 
ELIAS
Was it any good?
 
TRISTAN
Good would be an understatement.

There is a short silence. Tristan begins to crack up.
Despite his persistent efforts to not laugh, Elias soon
joins in on the laughter.
 
ELIAS
Don't get too ahead of yourself.
I'm not laughing at you. I'm
laughing at your stupidity.
 
TRISTAN
I definitely need to visit a
dentist now.
 
 
INT. APARTMENT KITCHEN. EVENING
 
Tristan and Elias are baking chocolate chip cookies. The
kitchen is relatively clean. They spray canola oil cooking
spray onto baking paper and prepare the cookies. Elias
inserts the two cookie trays into the oven.
 
TRISTAN
Wanna hear a joke?
 
ELIAS
No.
 
TRISTAN
(holds up canola oil
spray)
What's canola oils favourite
dessert?
 
ELIAS
(rolls his eyes)
What?
 
TRISTAN
(cannot deliver the joke
without bursting into a
fit of laughter)
Cannoli.
 
ELIAS
(deep sighs. gives
Tristan a look of utmost
disappointment)
No comment.
 
TRISTAN
You see, but to say "no comment"
is a comment in itself hence that
statement lacks in factuality.

ELIAS
Smart ass.
 
TRISTAN
How do you measure the
intelligence of buttocks?
 
ELIAS
I don't know. Maybe rip off the
ribbon from the present Aunt Jane
gave you for Christmas, dye it
with a blue felt tip pen, light it
on fire and use a universal
indicator to determine the colour.
 
TRISTAN
I don't have an aunt called Jane.
 
ELIAS
That's beyond the point.
 
 
INT. APARTMENT LIVING ROOM. EVENING
 
Tristan and Elias are snacking on cookies and popcorn while
watching Mr Bean. The doorbell rings.
 
TRISTAN
Pause it. Must be Ezra.
 
The camera is focused on Elias sitting on the sofa,
snacking on popcorn meanwhile the programme is paused.
 
EZRA (V.O)
Tristan! What's up man? How's it
going?
 
Ezra and Tristan walk towards the living room. Ezra and
Elias greet with a handshake.
 
ELIAS
Come watch with us mate.
 
EZRA
No time. Get ready, we're going to
a party in half an hour.
 
TRISTAN
You're going to a party in half an
hour. There's no 'we're'.
 
EZRA
No. We're going to a party in half
an hour.
(MORE)

EZRA (CONT'D)
I'll drag the both of you out of
the front door even if you're
funny unclothed. And I mean it.
 
CUT TO:
 
Elias is unhappily tying his shoelaces near the front door.
Tristan is yet in his room spraying cologne. Ezra is
drinking a glass of water in the kitchen.
 
EZRA (CONT'D)
Isn't it just fantastic to have an
extroverted party animal as a
roommate?
 
ELIAS AND TRISTAN (V.O)
No.
 
Elias walks over to the kitchen to join Ezra.
 
TRISTAN (V.O)
(chuckling)
My goodness. I think he needs to
visit a dentist now too.
 
Ezra displays a confused facial expression. Elias rolls his
eyes dramatically.
 
 
EXT. SEBA'S BACKYARD. NEAR MIDNIGHT
 
The song "We Are Young" is playing in the background.
Mostly everyone is excitedly screaming to the words of the
song, dancing with an unprecedented sense of confidence and
getting wasted. Ezra's having the time of his life. Tristan
and Elias are about the only two people who are not on the
dance floor. They're sitting in the lone corner on a table,
looking bored as ever.
 
TRISTAN
I hate parties.
 
ELIAS
That makes the two of us.
 
CUT TO:
 
 
EXT. DANCE FLOOR. NEAR MIDNIGHT
 
Aurelia, a seemingly confident, wild girl is dancing her
heart out and screaming to the words of the song. She's
simultaneously drinking beers and smoking on a cigarette.

CUT TO:
 
Hey Elias, you see that girl
wearing the leather jacket who's
dancing in the centre?
 
ELIAS
Yeah, what about her?
 
TRISTAN
Don't you think she looks sad?
 
ELIAS
How so?
 
TRISTAN
I don't know. I can see it in her
eyes. I can feel it in the way she
dances.
 
ELIAS
She looks like she's having a fun
time to me.
 
TRISTAN
I don't think so.
 
CUT TO:
 
Aurelia is passionately dancing to "Numb" by Witt Lowry. 
She's beautiful in an untraditional way. She radiates a
rebellious, carefree, confident and secure persona.
 
Ezra and his buddies join Elias and Tristan. They have a
few beers meanwhile watching the action on the dance floor,
their attention mostly captured by Aurelia.

Ezra and his buddies leave to dance some more. It is Elias
and Tristan alone once again at the table.
 
TRISTAN
I wanna ask her out.
 
ELIAS
You don't even know her name.
 
TRISTAN
I'm aware of that. How do you ask
a girl out?
 
ELIAS
You're asking me?
 
TRISTAN
I thought that was fairly obvious.
 
ELIAS
Man I don't know. Compliment her
perhaps. Tell her she looks
beautiful. Tell her you'd love to
get to know her a bit better. Ask
her out to dinner maybe? Or use a
cheesy pick up line?
 
TRISTAN
You know what, I'm gonna use my
charm to swoop her in with a joke.
 
ELIAS
That's a terrible terrible idea.
 
TRISTAN
Thanks for the support man.
 
ELIAS
Don't blame me when it goes
horribly wrong.
 
 
CUT TO:
 
Tristan makes his way towards the dance floor. He walks
towards Aurelia. The music is piercingly loud.
 
TRISTAN
(attempting to scream on
top of the music)
You wanna hear a joke?
 
Aurelia cannot seem to hear Tristan. This makes him very
uncomfortable and nervous. He doesn't know how to respond.

In order to adapt, it would be fitting of him to start
dancing but he absolutely hates to dance hence stands there
awkwardly awaiting for her attention. Meanwhile, Aurelia
happily continues to dance, this time with her eyes closed.
 
Ezra notices how uncomfortable Tristan feels within this
situation and decides to be a good friend and help out.
 
EZRA
You're being so awkward mate.
 
TRISTAN
I can't help it.
 
EZRA
(screaming abruptly)
Hey Aurelia, meet my friend
Tristan.
 
Aurelia's attention is captured. Aurelia opens her eyes and
looks at Tristan with a mellow, bored expression. She
drinks some beer.
 
TRISTAN
Hey. Uhh, why was the encyclopedia
late to his meeting? He got caught
up in a cyclone, media said it was
serious.
 
There is an awkward silence. Following this short silence,
Aurelia bursts into a rage of laughter which fills the
room. Everyone stops dancing for a moment in which Aurelia
informs everyone of the joke. This causes the whole room to
be in a complete rage of laughter. Especially Aurelia. Out
of shyness, Tristan completely abandons the scene to join
Elias.
 
 
EXT. THE FRONT OF SEBA'S HOME. 3AM
 
Everyone is heading home. Ezra alongside his friends, and
Tristan and Elias head out. They thank Jamie for a splendid
night and head towards their cars. Tristan feels regretful
that he forgot to ask Aurelia for her name or number. Ezra
says goodbye to his mates and joins Tristan and Elias.
 
EZRA
Did you guys have fun?
 
TRISTAN AND ELIAS
No.
 
ELIAS
I suppose you did.

EZRA
So much fun.
 
TRISTAN
Ezra, what was the name of the
girl I told the joke to?
 
EZRA
(trying to remember)
Oh! That's Aurelia.
 
TRISTAN
I wanna ask her out.
 
EZRA
Why didn't you?
 
TRISTAN
Because I'm an idiot.
 
ELIAS
Truer words have never been
spoken.
 
Ezra spots Aurelia walking alongside her girlfriends Pam,
Gabriella, Harper and Daisy.
 
EZRA
She's over there. If you wanna ask
her out, now's the chance.
 
TRISTAN
What's the correct way to ask out
a girl?
 
EZRA
Just be yourself.
 
 
INT. EZRA'S CAR. 3:15AM
 
Ezra is driving and Elias sits in the front seat of the
car. Tristan is positioned in the passenger seat, feeling
sorry for himself.
 
TRISTAN
I really liked her. She didn't
even give me a chance. Just
downright rejected me. Am I that
much of a loser? And I thought it
was going all well because she
found my joke funny. I guess not.

INT. THE LIVING ROOM. 11AM
 
Ezra and Elias have been awake for a bit. They're sitting
in the living room, watching Mind Your Language. Tristan,
who has just woke up, and is dressed in pyjamas and messy
hair, enters the living room with a glass of water.
 
EZRA
(energetically)
Good morning Tristan! Nice of you
to join us.
 
ELIAS
Hey man.
 
TRISTAN
Hey guys. I was thinking of
heading to the beach. Wanna come?
 
EZRA
Now?
 
TRISTAN
Yeah.
 
EZRA
Sorry man, I've already agreed to
go out with Jamie.
 
ELIAS
It's Tina's birthday, mum's coming
to pick me up in a bit. Sorry man.
 
TRISTAN
Happy birthday Tina. How old is
she now?
 
ELIAS
Nine. You know what man, you
should come to the party too. Tina
and the family love you. I'm sure
you'd be more than welcome.
 
TRISTAN
To be honest man, after yesterday,
I am not in the mood for any
party.
 
ELIAS
Fair enough.
 
CUT TO:
 17.

Ezra hands Tristan his car keys. Tristan thanks him.
Tristan is occupied with a large beach bag which sits on
his shoulder. He heads out.
 
 
INT. EZRA'S CAR. 11:15AM
 
Tristan drives to the song Wide Eyes by Billy Lockett. He
seems to be in a peaceful state. He's enjoying the song
deeply.
 
TRISTAN
(to himself)
This stuff should be on the radio.
 
 
EXT. WHALE BEACH PARKING LOT. 11:45AM
 
Tristan heads out of his car with his bulky beach bag,
eager to navigate closer towards the waters. He packs his
bag on the sand, applies sunscreen, removes his T-shirt and
runs towards the water. Tristan's happy place is the beach.
This is evident through how candidly happy he looks while
treading upon the waves, and swimming underwater.
 
 
EXT. WHALE BEACH. 3PM
 
Tristan begins to head out of the waters, and retreats to
his towel. He begins to dry off. Tristan lays his towel on
the sand, sits on it and begins to read his favourite novel
The Memoirs of an Imaginary Friend. After a few chapters,
he packs it away in his bag and admires the picturesque
beauty of the beach.

Right as they finish the song, Tristan spots Aurelia
walking in with a beach bag, with a mellow facial
expression. Upon impulse, he decides to approach her and
offer her company. He walks over to Aurelia with a gentle
smile painted upon his face. She recognises him immediately
and returns a small smile. Tristan feels flustered.
 
TRISTAN
Hey. I didn't get to introduce
myself properly yesterday. I'm
Tristan. Lovely to meet you. It's
not as though we haven't met
before... what I'd meant to say is
lovely to see you.
 
Tristan awkwardly waits for her reaction.
 
AURELIA
I'm Aurelia.
 
TRISTAN
Mind if I join you?
 
Aurelia shrugs her shoulders. Regardless, he joins her.
Tristan attempts to make conversation however it is clear
that Aurelia does not exactly wish to converse, and would
rather write in her journal. She's carefully positioned her

journal so that Tristan cannot see what she is writing.
Tristan feels very awkward. He doesn't know what to do.
 
TRISTAN (CONT'D)
So... you like to write?
 
Aurelia nods.
 
TRISTAN (CONT'D)
If I'm bothering you, I could
leave.
 
AURELIA
You're not bothering me.
 
Tristan stays for another half an hour, reading, and
decides to leave to buy himself some food. He asks Aurelia
if she's hungry, and she replies no. He gets out his wallet
which is in his bag, packs the rest of the beach bag into
the boot of the car and walks towards the nearest food
place. Tristan orders fish and chips. He sits back upon the
sand while eating his fish and chips. He notices that
Aurelia is gone. Tristan is halfway done with his meal,
when Aurelia approaches him nervously from behind.
 
AURELIA (CONT'D)
Hey, I hate to have to ask you for
a favour. Uh, my car isn't
starting for some reason, and I
don't have a mobile phone.
 
TRISTAN
Mobile phone.
 
Tristan generously passes his phone to Aurelia.
 
TRISTAN (CONT'D)
Here you go.
 
AURELIA
Thanks.
 
CUT TO:
 
AURELIA (CONT'D)
They said it's gonna take more
than 5 hours. Would you mind
taking me home? Only if I'm on the
way though. I wouldn't want to
inconvenience you.
 
TRISTAN
But what about the car?

TRISTAN
Sure.
 
AURELIA

INT. EZRA'S CAR. 4PM
 
They're listening to Venus by Sleeping At Last. The
atmosphere in the car is very awe-inspired, calm and
thoughtful. They both share a profound love for this song.
 
TRISTAN
This song's called Venus. Sleeping
At Last.
 
When the song ends, Tristan makes conversation with
Aurelia.
 
TRISTAN (CONT'D)
What sort of music do you listen
to?
 
AURELIA
Depends. And you?
 
TRISTAN
Songs with meaning. Songs that
deserve to be on the radio.
 
AURELIA
Like what?
 
TRISTAN
This.
 
AURELIA
