How Housing Projects Harm The Youth

Housing Projects lead the youth to the streets. Housing projects are more harmful than

helpful. Housing projects don't just harm the community but it also harms the residents. Most

housing projects are located in low income communities, which turn a lot of residents into the

streets. The problem is not the projects, the problem is the community they are in.

Kids get affected mentally and physically in the projects. Kids grow up fighting and

seeing drugs and guns. When kids grow up seeing those type of stuff as kids, they will grow up

familiar with them. Young adults see grown men get involved in violence and gang affiliations,

so that’s where the young adults see themselves. 39% of the families that live in the projects have

children, and they are less likely to succeed in school because of the stuff that happens at home.

(J. Popkin, 2017). This demonstrates why a lot young men in the projects grow up to dropout of

school and choosing the streets over education and possibly getting involved in gang affiliations.

It’s hard to escape the projects. Many people that live in the projects stay there until their

lifestyle change, which is harder then what u might think. The reason a lot of people can’t make

it out the projects is because they only see rapping or getting famous as a way out, but there is

many ways and the easiest one is getting a decent job. Another reason for the younger project

housing residences is joining local gangs. Younger residence in the projects often get attached

because of joining gang affiliated groups. The main reason that families can’t make it out the

projects is because they settle down. For ex. They get a job that can only pay the bills and offer

enough money for food, which is not what you want to do if you want to leave the projects. This

demonstrates why a lot of families stay stuck in the projects. Some might argue than we need

housing projects because they are affordable for low-income families, but all the projects gon do

is harm the family even more.

In conclusion, there is not an exact solution to stop the violence in the projects, but there is a

simple way to not increase the crime rate. The solution is to stop building housing projects!

Housing projects always had a reputation of violence and gang developments, so why keep on

building them?
