Documentary: The Breakdown
Overview
In this brief I will be going over my client, my idea, rules and regulations, my target audience and my
production schedule. This will help to breakdown the entirety of my production into one document
that will be easier to follow than looking at my work in its entirety.

Why Viibe Productions

The reason I have chosen to submit my production to Viibe Productions is
because they have given me the broadest production brief that will allow
me to come up with a production idea that I will enjoy creating and will
work with the themes I have thought about. The rules and regulations to
present my production are considerably broad and allow me to create a
production that is practically unregulated in terms of content. The only
rules that I am aware of regulate adding nudity and any unnecessary drugs
in my production.

Deadlines

Rules & Regulations:

- Documentary must be more than 10 minutes long
- No Nudity
- No Drugs
“The Breakdown”

The Idea for my production is to create a documentary that has me look at the work of three fashion
photographers and trying to recreate some of their photographic concepts in my own style. The title
“The Breakdown” is simply a description of the action I will be taking breaking down some of their key
concepts, trying to understand and recreate some of their work. I would be shooting this
documentary in a participatory mode with the inclusion of some voice over and interview style
narration. The plan is to record some footage of the photoshoots taking place as a main source of
footage for the production and after this has been done record an interview of myself and use this as
the main narration for the rest of the production. During the footage of the shoots in the production I
plan to include some of the images I have taken and show them and talk about how I think the shoots
themselves went and what I think I could have improved in each of my images.

This idea came as a development of some of the initial Ideas I had based on the idea of focusing on
fashion photography. The Idea came as an extension of the first idea I had titled “In conversation
with”. This idea would have me follow a photographer as they work and follow the same structure of
back to forth interview and footage showing the photographer at work. Instead at looking at one
photographers work I decided I would be looking at 3 different photographers and I would be the one
being interviewed to eliminate the amount I would have to rely on the other person.

Target Audience

The ideal target audience for my production would be people within the ages of 18-30. The reason I
say this is because the general theme of my production looks at different photography techniques
and concepts which I don’t think anyone younger would find particularly interesting. I intend to target
this specific age range because I think these are the people who are most likely to be interested in this
style of documentary. Targeting them will refine my target audience to people interested in
photography within that age range which is what I aim to achieve.

Why should my production be made?

I think my production should be made because I think it will allow me to exercise skills that I haven’t
been able to use to my full advantage in past productions. The one of the last productions I did was a
documentary, so I would say that I have a decent understanding of the codes and conventions of the
genre. I think my idea is somewhat unique and will have the ability to teach my audience something
new about photography and its concepts that they may not have known about prior to watching my
production. I want to make this production to further my skills in documentary editing which is
something that I have found somewhat difficult but have started getting a handle on. I intend to show
the progress of my editing by doing several drafts of my production before coming up with the final
production. Overall this is a topic I enjoy, and I hope to show that though the outcome of the
production itself.
