Skill related task on “Your debit master card” piece

Justification for the selection of reading piece

Reading piece selected for the skill task details the advantages provided by the debit master card.
The pamphlet of “Your debit master card” details about the advantages provided by the new card
in the form of plastic money. Content of the pamphlet suggests that customers can now have
access to money anywhere they go. They can use the debit master card for shopping; using
money online through their cell-phones, making easy purchases, withdrawing the cash oversees,
taking advantage of the BANK on the GO app provided by the bank and 100% money back
guarantee with the debit master card. Details presented in the pamphlet are easy and the content
used is common using simple language. Throughout the content no foreseeable words have been
observed that can be difficult for understanding.

Reading difficulty of any content is based on the level of overall language used in the discussion
by the writer. In the case of simple pamphlets, the writer is asked to design the content in simple
language so it reaches masses (Scrivener, 2011).

Lead-in and the vocabulary of pre teaching

Main aim of the lead-in needs is to boost the level of student interest for setting the main context
of the topic by offering a starting point to the student so they can work effectively in pairs.
Prediction of the selected theme takes place when students start to react on the given piece.

of time” Here, the task was to skim the main content present in the pamphlet for debit master
card of the company. Questions asked by students revolved around: “what is the maximum
amount for tap and go transaction?, can you use the debit card online?, Do you need to notify the
bank if you are going overseas, what are four basic methods for activating the card? How many
locations are accepted by your card around the world? Can you access the card without ATM
pin?

With the help of these questions students can easily skim the content and look for the material
answering the given questions. Self-imposed time limit given to the students is pressurizing and
with the help of effective skimming process, main content of the essay can be designed. General
question asked by the teacher encourages the students to answer quickly by looking at their
books trying to find the answer to the question (Scrivener, 2011).

Students are asked to take a follow-up with the help of pair check for verifying the answers
before moving towards the feedback of the teacher where correction is provided.

Sub-skill: scanning for the text (reading the content in detail)

In the reading task, it is suggested to use a set of simplified questions: statements of true/false,
short question answers or comprehensive questions. With the help of these questions students
can look up at the specific details presented in the task and for locating new pieces of
information provided in the content. Scrivener (2011) suggests that students are unable for

finding the starting point of the text because they move their eyes on entire page searching for
the basic key words that are required for answering the question asked by the teacher.

When students are done with this activity they start to pair for checking the answers with each
other before feedback is provided by the teacher. With the help of feedback teachers can ensure
that students are encouraged for participating in the group discussions.

Productive skill of writing

Writing theme can be presented in the form of some imaginary role-playing where a situation
helps the students for coming up with list or set or characteristics for supporting the main theme
of the discussion (Scrivener, 2011). In the given pamphlet easy access to money is the main
theme writing of students can be guided accordingly. For answering the main theme question
like: “what is the process of using the master debit card or can this card help in doing online
transactions?”

Expectation from the tutor is in the form of presented five sentences on the given set of
questions. This is similar with the led-in activity conducted before the reading task providing
rigid structure because students start to recall their earlier lessons for expanding the five student-
led groups.
