Title: Photosynthesis

Aim: To determine the effects of carbon dioxide concentration on photosynthesis rate

Apparatus/Material

Test tube, thermometer, lamp (light source), paper clip, stop watch, spatula, sodium hydrogen
carbonate solution of varying concentration, beaker, wooden board, ruler, aquatic plant(elodea).

Diagram

Procedure:

1. Cut a 10cm long stem of the Elodea plant.

2. Place the plant upwards in an inverted test tube containing distilled water at 25 0C.
3. Place the test tube in a beaker containing 500 ml of distilled water.
4. Place 2.5 g of sodium hydroxide carbonate in the beaker of water to give a 0.5
concentrated solution of carbon dioxide.
5. Place the apparatus in sunlight.
6. Leave the apparatus for 5 minutes so as to obtain equilibrium.
7. After 5 minutes, count the number of oxygen bubbles given off by the plant in the 5
minute period.
8. Use the glowing splint test to check and prove that the gas is oxygen.
9. Repeat the experiment using different concentrations of carbon dioxide namely 1.5%,
2.5%, and 3.5%
10. Repeat steps 1-9, placing the plants in a dark cupboard instead of sunlight.
11. Record all results in a tabular form and calculate the photosynthetic rate for each
concentration of sodium hydrogen carbonate.
12. Represent the results graphically to show the rate of photosynthesis versus carbon dioxide
concentration.
