Gilgamesh is generally seen by scholars as a historical

figure, since inscriptions have been found which confirm
the existence of other figures associated with him in the
epic. If Gilgamesh existed, he probably was a king who
reigned sometime between 2800 and 2500 BC. The
Sumerian kings list claims that Gilgamesh ruled the city of
Uruk for 126 years. According to the Tummal Inscription,
Gilgamesh and his son Urlugal rebuilt the sanctuary of the
goddess Ninlil in Tummal, a sacred quarter in her city of
Nippur.

Gilgamesh was very strong but cruel. He ordered the

people of Uruk to build many palaces and also made his
subjects in constant fear. Then, the people of Uruk asked
help from god and the gods led Enkidu to Uruk.

In The Epic of Gilgamesh, the great king is thought to be

too proud and arrogant by the gods and so they decide to
teach him a lesson by sending the wild man, Enkidu, to
humble him. Enkidu and Gilgamesh, after a fierce battle in
which neither are bested, become friends and embark on
adventures together. In The Epic of Gilgamesh, the great
