Water Pollution
Cameroon

One of the major issues in Cameroon is water pollution. The increasing rate of this
problem is very alarming and there must be a change in this problem. This is being
caused by the rapid increase of urbanization and industrialization. Major cities in
Cameroon do not have many available sewage treatment water plants. The major
problems that need to discussed are the absence of sewage treatment plants in
Cameroon’s major cities and the high amount of oils and waste found in the waters, too.
This has also cause water borne diseases to be present in Cameroon’s water. In
September 2010, more than 385 Cameroonians lost their lives due to cholera outbreak.
These problems have arisen due to the industries refusing to treat contaminated water
before unloading it into the environment and improper waste disposal. The greater
discussion that has to be spoken about is how the pollution in the water is going to
affect Cameroon’s future and economics.
In Cameroon, many citizens lack access to clean water in both rural and urban areas
(Borgen Project 2017). Cameroon has not majorly tried to help improve the issue. There
are currently no active laws in Cameroon that regulate water pollution (Regulation
2017). Although, Cameroon has put in effort to improve the issue. In upcoming cities, for
example Yaounde, the country has already built in sewage water treatment plants
(Water Residuals 2017). Cameroon should improve on the building of sewage water
treatment plants in cities that are highly populated.
The UN should address water pollution in Cameroon by funding the country in
building modern techniques to clean the polluted water. The HDI in Cameroon is 0.556,
medium. Although, the GDP Per Capita is 1500 (Economy: Cameroon GDP Per Capita
2017). Most of Cameroon’s citizens will not be able to fund sewage water treatment
plants for their local neighborhood. The UN could also support us in the creation of jobs
consisting of cleaning the polluted water. Cameroon would need funds for the
machinery.
