Lesson Plan (3rd grade)

Reading (Main Idea)

- The teacher will open with asking students what they do during P.E. The teacher will go around
the class and as the children answer, write down what they say.
- After all the activities are written down, explain to the students at all the things that they had
said are evidence of one main topic, “Things we do during P.E.”

Direct Lesson:
- The teacher will explain the meaning of the concept, which is “The main idea is the one idea that
the passage is mainly, or mostly about. The supporting details tells more about the main idea.”

Guided Practice:
- The teacher will read a short passage to the class. After the teacher will ask the students
questions about the main idea of the passage and about the details supporting the main idea.

Independent Practice:
- The teacher will give each student a worksheet with 5 different short passages. The teacher will
ask the students to read the passages, circling the main idea and underlining the supporting
evidence of each passage.

Closing:
- The teacher will select a few students to state what they underlined and circled for the different
passages and explain their answers. After, the teacher should take up the papers to see if the
students are understanding the concept of main idea and supporting details.
