The C-segment
Preparing for the arrival of the all-new Focus involves understanding all that this vehicle has to offer
customers in the C-segment. But what exactly is the C-segment and why is it so important? According to
Ford forecasters, global small car sales — B- and C-segments combined — will increase to 38 million by 2012.
To put this into perspective, this year one out of every four vehicles sold globally falls within the C-segment.
Within five years, the B- and C-segments could reach 25 percent of the U.S. market.
This is a golden opportunity for Ford, and the all-new Focus is positioned to appeal to this growing customer
segment. Ford has never been more ready to compete.
The Ford Car Lineup
With the launch of the 2011 Fiesta, the all-new Focus no longer fits into the “entry level” position in the Ford car
lineup. The Ford showroom is evolving and growing, and each of the models has a distinct place, appealing to
different buyer needs. Demand for C-segment vehicles is coming, in part, from a trend called “rightsizing.” This
means customers more conscious of fuel prices, their carbon footprints and their individual vehicle needs are
likely to choose vehicles in this segment.
It’s important to note customers downsize cars — not expectations. Those stereotyping small cars as “basic
transportation” are in for a surprise. The all-new 2012 Focus will offer an array of features and technologies
previously unavailable in this segment.
Focus loyalists coming into the showroom to see the all-new 2012 Focus will find a whole new vehicle. While
the first-generation Focus inspired design elements such as the daylight opening (DLO), which is the window
line that can be seen from the side, this Focus is quite different. The 2011 model is known for being fuel-
efficient and fun to drive with European-inspired ride and handling.
The next-generation Focus builds on this strong foundation — adding more performance-enhancing features
along with cool technology and so much more. These premium features offered on the 2012 model elevate
Focus from an economical starter vehicle to one that more-discerning buyers would love to own.

• Overall chassis stiffness allowed engineers to tune characteristics
the European-inspired suspension for exceptional
ride and handling characteristics Key Features
• MacPherson strut design with a rearward-facing
Front-wheel Drive (FWD) Powertrain Layout L-arm gives the maximum amount of room in front
• Weight of engine on front end provides good traction of the suspension to help improve crash performance
in slippery road conditions • Friction-reducing geometry helps engineers precisely
• Allows for a roomy interior package, especially tune the struts for remarkable ride and handling
rear-seat leg and foot room • Suspension bushings are tuned independently for
responsive steering and a smooth ride
Torque Vectoring Control
• Use of hydrobushings in critical locations helps
• New feature to Focus for 2012
isolate the body from the suspension
• Helps increase the “fun-to-drive” factor
• A large bushing at the top of each MacPherson strut
• Uses the vehicle braking system to deliver the effect of mount helps resist vertical movements from uneven

on wet or slippery surfaces
– Helps reduce torque steer during acceleration
Focus
• Suspension bushings help improve NVH
performance while maintaining excellent ride for parking
and handling characteristics – At higher speeds, EPAS delivers less steering assist
for more confident control
Key Features
• EPAS replaces the hydraulic gear system that pulled
• Independent design helps reduce impact of road power (and efficiency) from the engine via a belt
imperfections into the passenger cabin
• Helps improve fuel economy and eliminate hydraulic
• Isolated rear subframe helps reduce interior vibration noises common with hydraulic systems

Steering (EPAS) with drift control and active that can cause the vehicle to pull left or right
nibble control – Assists the steering effort to help the driver
• Rack-and-pinion steering delivers linear steering maintain a straighter path
effort as the driver turns the wheel, providing – Helps driver avoid unwanted lane changes (or drift)
responsive steering that naturally follows a straight • Reduces steering effort required when driving on
line as the wheel is turned crowned roads or in heavy side winds
• Tight (curb-to-curb) turning diameter
– 36.0 ft. (15", 16" and 17" wheels)
ENGINEERING INSIGHT
– 40.0 ft. (18" wheels)
• Quick 147:1 steering ratio means drivers don’t have to Active Nibble Control
turn the wheel very far to go around a tight corner What Is Nibble?
• Steering nibble is undesirable rotational vibration
that can be felt through the steering wheel –
mostly when the vehicle is traveling straight
• Nibble is often caused by the presence of an out-
of-balance front wheel/tire or “brake shudder,”
often caused by unequal wear of the brake rotors
How Active Nibble Control Works
• Torque sensors located in the electric motor sense
nibble vibrations
• The electric motor then applies a counter-
rotational force to cancel out the vibration
• This counter-rotational force helps reduce
unwanted vibration in the steering wheel
Key Benefits
• EPAS system sensors continuously monitor
steering wheel inputs
• When sensors detect steering wheel rotational
vibration — or nibble — EPAS counteracts the
nibble and seamlessly cancels it out
• Helps reduce the amount of minor steering
corrections caused by the steering nibbles and helps
provide a more comfortable driving experience
