Peter Dinklage: 4. Peter Initially Struggled To Find Work As An Actor, Partially
1. Good morning.
In this oral presentation, I decided to talk about the actor and
film producer, Peter Dinklage. I choose to speak about him,
because, I’m a fan of his work.
2. Peter Hayden Dinklage was born on June 11 of 1969 (nineteen
sixty-nine), in Morristown, New Jersey, to Diane, an elementary
school teacher, and John Carl Dinklage, an insurance salesman.
Peter was born with achondroplasia, a genetic condition that
affects bone growth, a person with this form of dwarfism
usually has a normal-sized head and torso but short limbs. He
grew up as the only dwarf in his family.
In fifth grade he got to play the lead in one of his school
dramas, ‘The Velveteen Rabbit’. The play was greeted with a
roaring applause and appreciation from the audience which
boosted his confidence and he continued to participate in the
drama club until he graduated from the Delbarton School in
1987 (nineteen eighty-seven).
3. Dinklage then attended Bennington College, where he studied
for a drama degree. After that he moved to New York City with
his friend, to build a theater company. Failing to pay the rent,
they moved out of their apartment. Dinklage then worked at a
data processing company for 6 years before pursuing a career
as a full-time actor.
4. Peter initially struggled to find work as an actor, partially
because he refused to take the roles typically offered to actors
with his condition, such as "elves or leprechauns". He made his
credited film debut in the low-budget independent comedy-
drama “Living in Oblivion”. In the film, he played an actor who
was frustrated at being offered only clichéd roles because he
happened to be a dwarf.
5. Peter delivered his break-out performance as an actor in the
film ‘The Station Agent’. He received a number of awards for
his role as well as worldwide recognition. The film received a
warm welcome at the Sundance Film Festival. Dinklage's
performance also enthralled critics, with one heralded his work
as "warm, heartbreaking and hilarious."
