Translation Café started in the year 2007, as the magazine of the MA Programme for the Translation of the
Contemporary Literary Text (MTTLC), at the University of Bucharest.
The eZINE consists of translations by graduate students of MTTLC, as a prolongation of their activity in
class. They are meant to give the graduates a taste of their future profession, and also to increase their sense of
responsibility for a translation they sign under their own name.
The texts are translated from or into English, and belong to all literary genres – fiction, poetry, literary
criticism, as well as the drama, the essay. The focus is on Modern Literature, broadly meaning the 20th and the
21st centuries: Romanian, British, and American among others.

More innocent, still not really innocent Mai nevinovată, dar nu nevinovată,
In this universe in which În acest univers în care
The laws of nature themselves decide Înseși legile firii hotărăsc
Who has to kill who, Cine trebuie să ucidă pe cine
And the one who kills the most is king: Și cel ce ucide mai mult este rege:
How admiringly do they record Cu ce admirație este filmat
The placid and ferocious lion tearing up the deer, Leul placid și feroce sfârtecând căprioara,
And as I turn off the TV set or close my eyes, Iar eu, închizând ochii sau televizorul,
I feel like I’m less of an accomplice to murder Am senzația că particip la crimă mai puțin,
Despite knowing that the rushlight of life Deși știu că-n opaițul vieții
Constantly requires blood as fuel, Trebuie pus mereu sânge,
The blood of another. Sângele altuia.

Amber Chihlimbar
Forgetting about the world and myself, Uitând de lume și uitând de mine,
I can feel loneliness filling me up like honey Simt cum singurătatea mă umple ca o miere
Pouring down into its proper vessel, Curgând în vasul ce i se cuvine
Proper in its need of it. Pentru c-o soarbe și o cere.
Sacred are the honeycombs that let its gold Sacri sunt fagurii din care curge
Pour on my afterlife, Aurul ei pe viața-mi de apoi,
When your clear punishment, Când limpedea-ți pedeapsă, Demiurge,
O, God, Mă înfășoară-n dulcele-i noroi.
Wraps me up in its own sweet mud.
But the torment is a delight instead of an ordeal Dar voluptate-i chinul, nu calvar
And I remind myself Și îmi aduc de mine-aminte
As a tiny insect captured in amber, Ca de o gâză prinsă-n chihlimbar,
Inside the bright language crypt. În cripta luminoasă de cuvinte.

My pain ceases to exist beyond myself, Durerea mea nu există dincolo de mine,
It is confined within the bounds of my body Ea este închisă între limitele corpului meu
Working like a magnet Funcționând ca un magnet
That has gathered it from the world. Care a strâns-o din lume.
I privatised the pain, as it were, Am privatizat, cum s-ar spune, durerea
And now I am surrounded by a bright void Și acum în jurul meu e un gol luminos

The words dress me up Cuvintele mă îmbracă
In fog and clouds În ceață și nori
From which a morning star Din care rar câte un luceafăr

Everything is either too far Totul este sau prea departe

Always the wrong lenses, Lentilele mereu nepotrivite,

“Who’s there behind you?“, you asked „Cine e în spatele tău? ”, m-ai întrebat
And I dared not look back. Și eu n-am îndrăznit să întorc capul.

And I want to know who it is.“ Și vreau să știu cine este. ”
But without looking back Dar fără să mă întorc,
I whispered: “It’s Nobody.“ Eu am șoptit: „Este Nimeni.”
