DALTON’S LAW PROBLEMS

1) A container contains three gases, N2, O2 and Ar, with partial pressures of 23.3 kPa, 40.9 kPa and 13.7 kPa
respectively. What is the total pressure inside the container?

PN2 = 23.3 kPa PT = PN2 + PO2 + PAr

PO2 = 40.9 kPa
PAr = 13.7 kPa PT = 23.3 kPa + 40.9 kPa + 13.7 kPa = 77.9 kPa
PT = ?

2) In the chem lab, a student filled a balloon with 2 different gases, CO 2 and N2. The atmospheric pressure in the
chem lab was 770.0 mmHg and the partial pressure of CO2 added to the balloon was 0.3255 atm. What was the
partial pressure of N2 in the balloon?

PT = 770.0 mmHg PT = PCO2 + PN2

760 mmHg
PCO2 = 0.3255 atm ( ) = 247.4 mmHg
1 atm PN2 = PT − PCO2
P N2 = ?
PN2 = 770.0 mmHg - 274.4 mmHg = 522.6 mmHg

3) In a lab experiment which was done with a barometric pressure of 1.043 atm, some H2 was collected over water
at 27.0°C. What is the partial pressure of the “dry” H2 in the container?

PT = 1.043 atm PT = PH2 O + PH2

PH2O at 27°C = 0.035 atm
P H2 = ? PH2 = PT − PH2 O

PH2 = 1.043 atm - 0.035 atm = 1.008 atm

4) 75.0 mL of a gas was collected over water at 22.0°C and 749.8 torr. What will the volume of the “dry” gas be at
STP?

V1 = 75.0 mL P1 V1 P2 V2
T1 = 22.0°C = 295.2 K =
T1 T2
P1 = 749.8 torr – 19.83 torr = 730.0 torr
V2 = ? P1V1T2 = P2V2T1
T2 = 273.15 K
P2 = 760 torr P1 V1 T2 (730.0 torr)(75.0 mL)(273.15 K)
V2 = = = 66.7 mL
P2 T1 (760 torr)(295.2 K)

5) The pressure of a 1.35 moles of a gas in a container was 580.0 torr. What would the pressure inside the
container be if 2.20 moles of the gas was in it?

n1 = 1.35 mol P1 P2
P1 = 580.0 torr =
n1 n2
P2 = ?
n2 = 2.20 mol P1 n2 (580.0 torr)(2.20 mol)
P2 = = = 945 torr
n1 1.35 mol
