THE VOCABULARY SIZE OF TEACHER CANDIDATES

AND THEIR SUCCESS IN MAJOR AREA COURSES

A REVIEW

The Author:Mehmet Altay

The author begins this article by describing one of the main indicators of
linguistic proficiency caused by vocabulary competency in foreign languages. most
ESP instructions focus on vocabulary for special purposes. their ability to master
certain vocabulary not only affects their proficiency in the use of foreign languages.
but also their success in this field. That also happened in the case of current teacher
candidates. The main aim of this study was to investigate whether the value of the
main course examinations in prospective teachers in foreign languages was related
to the size of their vocabulary skills in English. The researcher stated that this study
was important because of investigating whether there was a relationship between
prospective teacher vocabulary in the ELT department in Turkey and their academic
success is in accordance with their test scores on the main field courses.
The author describes the research question in this paper consisting of three
questions. First, whether the larger vocabulary size has a positive effect on the test
scores under the ELT student study program. the second is there a further
relationship between the vocabulary size and the success rate of the main field of
the prospective teacher. the third is the average vocabulary size of the prospective
teacher. The theory in this study reveals that the entities of the words a learner has
are two: 1) learning vocabulary, and 2) known vocabulary. The former stands for
learned words for a specific or transient purpose while the last one is taken in the
lexicon. mental (Altay, 2015; Altay & Dikilitaş, 2016; Nation, 2012). And then followed
by other theories, A similar study conducted by Becker (1977) acknowledged the
existence of a link between vocabulary size and the achievement of disadvantaged
students with low social, economic quality, or health (quoted in Baker, 1995).
It seems the researcher did not explain the type of research design in this
paper but here it can be identified that this study uses quantitative research in order
to see the correlation and influence between the vocabulary size of the prospective
teacher and their success in mastering a particular field. to achieve existing research
goals. this case was discovered by researchers from 119 undergraduate students
studying at the Yogyakarta State University Department of English Language
Teaching at Kocaeli University, a state university that is in the northwest of the
Republic of Turkey and very close to several other prosperous cities. English is
spoken as a foreign language in the country and participants are among the first 1/3
in terms of their success in national placement tests regarding the proficiency of their
target language.
As a whole the author explained this research methodology starting from the
data collection instrument to the data analysis as follows the procedure for retrieving
data in this finding is done by means of all participants being asked to visit
myvocabularysize.com, the official website for the National Vocabulary Size Test.
Data analysis conducted by researchers is the first type of data analysis is simple
linear regression to measure the effect of vocabulary size above the value of the
main area course. Variables may have no other effect; still, there can be a
correlation between the two. Therefore, a correlation analysis between vocabulary
size and the value of the main area courses was also conducted.
The advantages in the procedure for collecting data are that they are
monitored and recommended not to use any resources or references such as
dictionaries. to see their ability. while the advantages of data analysis are. Variables
may have no other effect; still, there can be a correlation between the two. while the
weakness is time is not limited because the purpose is only to determine the size,
not fluency or more.
The researchers found the main findings in this study Based on simple linear
regression analysis for all participants, no significant equations that showed the
effect of vocabulary size on participants' academic success in Indonesia were their
main area courses and Based on correlation analysis, there seemed to be no
significant correlation between vocabulary size and value of the main area course
The advantage of this research is that those who are prospective teachers are
required to master vocabulary more specifically in certain fields because from where
prospective teachers can demonstrate the abilities they have in their lack of focus in
this study they only focus on the vocabulary objects the prospective teacher has
without pay attention to the structure of its use in sentences.
The main objective of this study was to investigate whether the EFL
candidate teacher's main course test scores correlated with their vocabulary size in
English from the depth of their vocabulary. Furthermore, a vocabulary size test,
which measures the breadth of vocabulary only, may not reveal sub-types further
knowledge at once. Corpus learners from ELT Students can discuss quite a lot of
important words and terminology related to their fields, which is an invaluable
resource for every prospective teacher too
