1-What was/were the learning objectives/outcomes of the lesson? (Add state objectives if
known, for example, TEKS §111.4. Grade 2.b.)

The objective of the lesson is to identify vegetable and fruits in Turkish language.

2-How did the teacher begin and end the lesson?

The teacher begin the class with full basket of fruit . The students were focused on them and start
thinking what is going to happen. She finished the lesson with the empty basket because during
lesson she shared the fruits to the students.

3-What did the teacher use for teaching materials or instructional aids/equipment?

She prepared smart board presentation with games and songs about fruits and also she brought
some types of fruits for them to recognize easily.

4-Which instructional methods and strategies did the teacher use? ( lecture, inquiry,
discovery learning, discussions, games or simulations, demonstrations, cooperative learning,
integration of technology, socrative questioning, etc)

She lectured first then with the games /simulations she taught them the fruits and vegetables.

5-How did the teacher assess learning? (informal, formal, formative, summative, oral, open-
ended, quiz, feedback etc) See Chapter 8 for more information on assessment methods

The teacher grouped them as 4 students in a group and prepared for them mini quiz and asked
them questions about fruits and vegetables . if they get the answer she gave the fruit/vegetable to
the winner team.

6- What can you say about the teacher’s philosophy/beliefs and style?
(Traditional/progressive, behaviorist, student-centered vs. teacher centered, authoritative etc)
The teacher was in between student-teacher centered because she explain first 10 minutes but
then she gave a lot of activities for them to discover and find out by their selves. She prepared
games for them, which really helped the children to identify the things easily.

7-How does the teacher manage classroom? Can you identify classroom management
techniques used?

She grouped the students first. Then she let those students discuss and try to answer her. The
noise was under the control but she didn’t allow them to communicate with the other group
members.

8-Observe in the classroom setting and determine types of behavior students play when off-
task. What do they do when they are not paying attention? How does the teacher re-direct
them or get them back on task?

When the students understood the topic, their attention reduced and their minds were in
somewhere else. That time the teacher played the short songs about fruits and she made them
repeat and memorize the song then they came back to the class.

9-How does the teacher communicate with students (verbal, vocal, meta-verbal or non-verbal
communication such as facial, body language, use of space, motion and time?)

The teacher mostly used body language as well as verbal. Every act of hers she spoke in Turkish
language for them to understand ,when they were lost she used body language.

10-Who were the students in the class? What did you notice about them? (Background,
diversity, attitude, motivation, interaction, participation, etc)

The students were grade 7 students. There were different nationalities in the class but their
motivation was good and they really performed well. Boys and girls were sitting with their
fellow friends. They were ready to learn. They cooperate with the teacher and they ate a lot of
fruit that day.

11-What did you see that is effective in engaging students? What do you see that is
ineffective in keeping students engaged?

If a teacher wants the student to engage the class s/he should contact with them name by name
and be going round frequently so that the will fell her gratitude in class. Talking from the board
only is the most ineffective way for me. It doesn’t help to make the class interesting.

12-What are the two instructional strategies you observed and would like to apply in your
classroom?
I liked when she entered the class with a full basket of fruit . it attracted the students . I will think
of an activity like that. For example if I am teaching triangles I can bring triangular biscuits or
any thing that is triangle in shape. And I also liked the songs. They were funny and educative.

13-What are two important classroom management strategies that you observed and would
like to apply in your classroom?

I liked her grouping style in the class. I will also apply it to my lessons. Then I liked her
demonstration style. When she was demonstrating also she took the students’ attention. They
were engaged and trying to understand what is she explaining for them. It really helped rather
than just saying the translation.
