Angles

Fourth Grade Math Standards: 4.G.A1, 4.G.A2

Kelsey McCormick

I. Suggested group size: Students will be working independently on this project.

II. Standards:
a. 4.G.A.1 - Draw points, lines, line segments, rays, angles (right, acute, obtuse), and perpendicular
and parallel lines. Identify these in two-dimensional figures.
b. 4.G.A.2 - Classify two-dimensional figures based on the presence or absence of parallel or
perpendicular lines, or the presence or absence of angles of a specified size. Recognize right
triangles as a category, and identify right triangles.
III. Objective: Students will learn the four different angles and then use this information to identify and
draw the four angles.
IV. Materials:
a. Toothpick
b. Glue
c. Construction paper
d. Markers
V. Procedures:
a. Instruction
i. Introduce the new topic to the students
ii. Begin the presentation with right angles. Demonstrate how a right angles measures 90
degrees.
iii. Then move into other angles. Introduce the students to acute angles. Explain how it is
smaller than a right angle and under 90 degrees, then explain obtuse angles and how they
are greater than 90 degrees.
iv. Next, explain straight angles and how when an angle measures 180 degrees it looks like a
straight line.
v. At the end of the introduction ask students to help you create a T-chart on the white board
and write down how the angles are similar and how they are different.
vi. Finally, Discuss the lesson and check for understanding.
b. Interactive modeling
i. Before beginning this activity, create your own poster to provide an example for the
students.
ii. This is when the students will participate in a hands-on activity in which they will create
their own angle posters using the toothpicks to represent the four types of angles.
iii. Pass out the materials to the students (toothpicks, glue, construction paper, and markers)
iv. Display your poster for the class to see and explain how they will use toothpicks to
create the four types of angles on construction paper. Toothpicks should be glued down
to represent the correct angle.
v. Inform the students that they will use a marker to write the title for the poster and label
all the angles.
vi. Encourage them to make their posters colorful and creative.
VI. Assessment: I will grade the students work based on accuracy and completion. I will be grading their
process by their Interactive modeling. It will help me determine which students understand the materials
and which students will need more help understanding the materials.
