Should humanity be allowed to kneel while
the National Anthem is being played?
Background Information
● Colin Kaepernick

● Reason for protest

● Francis Scott Key

Thesis
Though some may say kneeling during the
National Anthem is a legal form of peaceful
protest, standing during the National Anthem
is actually the right thing to do because:
kneeling is disrespectful to citizens who
changed the world for the better, kneeling
doesn’t end police brutality, and kneeling starts
conflict across the world, which helps to show
why appreciation for those looking out for us .
Counterclaim
● Brings attention to police brutality
● Legal form of protest
● Appropriate and justified
Kneeling For The National Anthem is Disrespectful to all Military
Personal
● "For me it is offensive at the least and painful at the most to see someone disrespect the
flag or anthem, as they have become linked to the sacrifices that I have seen made in their
name," said Nick Stefanovic, a Marine Corps infantry veteran who deployed twice to
Afghanistan.
● Disrespectful to all the heroes who have fought for the freedom that you have today

Rodriguez
Protesting The National Anthem Doesn’t End Police Brutality
● According to statistics, “The number of black people killed by police in the last year (215) was more
than all the police who died in the line of duty (148), U.S. servicemen killed in action (2) and
Americans killed by Islamic terrorists (0) combined.” the police shootings against colored people
haven’t stopped.
● Since the protest, “Although non-Hispanic whites make up 62 percent of the population, most of the
unarmed, armed, and fleeing victims killed by police in 2018 were people of color.” colored people
have still been shot more than non- Hispanic whites.
When Humanity Kneels During the National Anthem it
Sparks Conflict Across the Country
● New Orleans Saints quarterback, Drew Brees argues "[I]t's an oxymoron that you're sitting
down, disrespecting that flag that has given you the freedom to speak out."

● Fans have been burning Kaepernick's jersey to show their distaste for his actions.

Conclusion
● Kneeling during the National Anthem is the wrong thing to do because
kneeling is disrespectful, kneeling creates conflict, and kneeling doesn’t end
police brutality.
● When standing for the National Anthem you’re showing appreciation for all
of the heros who have changed U.S. for the better, without them our country
would have a lot more tragedy. And when humanity stands it unites us as a
country, and recognizes all of the hardship we have gotten through. Standing
for the flag is honoring the people that you have the freedom to kneel.
