BOOK EXTENSION ACTIVITY - LESSON PLAN

1. Pre-K/ CCSD K-2nd Grade Core Standards:

 With prompting and support, identify characters, settings, and major events in a story.
(kindergarten)
2. Objectives:
SWBAT -
 Students will identify the character in the story
 Students will describe a similar event that they have live.

3. Materials/Equipment:
 Book Nino’s mask
 Plates
 Painting
 Crayons
 Glitter
 Feathers
 Color paper
 Basket
 Scissors
 Glue
 Markers

4. Teaching:
A. Reading the book
 Start by showing the cover of the book and ask students what they see on the cover of the
book. Read the title and ask them to predict what is going to happen I the story, what the
story is going to be about. Start reading the book and stop after reading the first page and
ask students if they know what is a fiesta discuss their answer for a few minutes. Ask
students if they have been in a fiesta before. Then asked students for help to translate the
words in Spanish to English. Continue reading the book and stop after four pages, ask
students to why they think Niño is not ready for the festival? Discuss their answer.
Continue reading and stop after Niño have name all the animals that he would like to be.
With help and support translate the words to English. Continue reading and stop where
Niño has made his mask, ask students what character they would like to be. Continue
reading and stop after reading just one page, ask student what is the reactions of his
parents. continue reading and stop after reading where tiger said catch if you can. Ask
students what they think, would Niño be able to catch the tiger. Continue reading and stop
after reading where the tiger said you can’t catch me. Ask children what the people have
to do to catch the tiger, discuss their answer for a few minutes. Continue reading until
finish the book. Ask students to tell on classmate what is their favorite character and what
the love about the story, give them a few minutes then come back together. Ask students
to share their respond with the class, ask students if they have wear mask before discuss
their answer.

B. Extension activity:

 Show students the material and ask them what can we make with them, discuss their
answer. Tell children that today we will make our own mask. Ask children to go to their
tables in each table children will pick one person to grab the materials. Their will be a
basket for each table that will have all the material for them to use. Grab a plate and
scissor and show students how they can make the eyes, tell children that ask for help and
support if they need it. Give children about 15 minutes to create their mask walk around
the classroom to see if any student need help.

5. Closure:

Ask student to share their work with the class and give a name to their mask.
