PAST: The action is in the past.

 John drove to London on Monday.

PAST PROGRESSIVE: Add ing to most verbs. Ex. play > playing, cry > crying, bark >
barking.
The past progressive describes an action that was in progress at a specific time in the
past. It can be used:

Suject+ verbo auxiliar (to be) + verb+ing.

To describe an action that started in the past and was interrupted by another action:

 He was writing an e-mail when the phone rang.

PAST PERFECT: The past perfect, also called the pluperfect, is a verb tense
used to talk about actions that were completed before some point in the past.

Subject+ “had” + past participle…

 They had not studied English before they went to London

PAST PERFECT PROGRESSIVE: The past perfect continuous tense (also


known as the past perfect progressive tense) shows that an action that started
in the past continued up until another time in the past.

Subject + “had” + “been” + verb+ing…

 I had been studying English for 2 years when I went to London.
