Catholic World View and Teacher Witness (See Teacher Note) Link with Key Understandings and Learning Points by highlighting
Catholic’s believe that humans are made of a mortal body and an immortal soul which together make us whole and allows use to be receptive
to God and the gifts he bestows. Since we are created in the image of God, we have a responsibility to care for both our bodies and souls (this
can be linked with the Year 6 Health topic which explores both the physical and emotional changes which occur during puberty and looking
after both your physical and mental wellbeing).
The Holy Spirit has granted the gifts and fruits in order to help empower us when we feel powerless so that we have the strength and wisdom
to live like Jesus and spread and defend his word. This one will be important to focus on especially in light of the challenges which are
currently facing the Catholic Church – it may be a case of explaining to the students that the Church is imperfect in nature because it is made
up of humans who are not perfect but that this does not mean we should not try to live like Jesus. It needs to be embedded in the students that
just because they have been given a gift that it is automatic, you need to nurture and care for them. A classroom culture which demonstrates
how students can nurture them – taking part in daily prayer, helping with Eucharistic celebrations, Sunday Mass, loving learning, engaging with
Scripture through the Arts, forgiving others, having a wonder wall. Discussing with the students times when you personally have sought to rely
on the Holy Spirit.
Note I: Due to fire’s transformative properties and the description from the First Pentecost in Acts 2:3 fire is a prominent theme in the
Confirmation Unit of Work. It could be a very useful link to integrating this topic across the curricula. An investigation into the role of fire in the
Australian ecosystem and how the Indigenous Australians managed fire as a tool could be undertaken in HASS. In Art students explore how
fire does not just destroy but also can be used to create by making sketching pictures with charcoal, firing pottery, making jewellery etc.
Note II: The unit of work need to be explored in a way which prepares for the students for the Sacrament of Confirmation in conjunction with
the Parish and most importantly with the parents/caregivers who are the leaders in a student’s Faith Journey.
Note III: While exploring this unit of work be aware that some students may have already been Confirmed or will not be undergoing the
sacramental program. Ensure that what is being taught supports these student’s experiences and celebrate the differences found within the
classroom.
