Bottom Plug
Bottom Plug
Bottom plug is used ahead of the cement t prevent contamination with the
mud ahead of the slurry and it wipes off the film of the mud that adhears to the
inside of the casing. A rubber plug used to separate the cement slurry from other
fluids, reducing contamination and maintaining predictable slurry performance.
Two types of cementing plug are typically used on a cementing operation, the
top and the bottom plug. The bottom plug is launched ahead of the cement
slurry to minimize contamination by fluids inside the casing prior to cementing.
A diaphragm in the plug body ruptures to allow the cement slurry to pass
through after the plug reaches the landing collar.
A bottom plug separates the cement slurry from the drilling fluid, and a
top plug separates the cement slurry from the displacement fluid. The bottom
plug has a membrane that ruptures when it lands at the bottom of the casing
string, creating a pathway through which the cement slurry may flow into the
annulus. the colour of this plug is bright than the top plug. the colours are
yellow, red, and orange
For dropping the bottom plug, wiper plugs are pumped ahead and behind
the cement slurry on primary cement jobs. First, Separate slurry from drilling
fluids. Second, wipe the inside walls of the casing. Thrird, help provide a
positive indication (pressure) that the cement is in place outside the casing
