Sparta Middle School Band Lesson Plan

7th grade
Objectives
1. SWBAT count rhythms and demonstrate their understanding in a new way
2. SWBAT know which parts to listen for and when to back off on volume
3. SWBAT work through musical transitions smoothly in their pieces

Good things

Warm-Up
1. Bb scale Whole notes
2. Eb scale “concentration”
3. F scale “steps”
4. Chromatic scale eighth notes (3 times speeding up a little each time)
5. Rhythm exercises in book (page 52)
- Counting with class system
- Introduce new one
- Clap=Quarter note or longer
- Stomp= Eighth note
- Eventually put into groups on different rhythms
- Switch claps and stomps
Rites of Tamburo
1. Work on 101-end
- Use of counting exercise
- Start last 4 measures and then go back to 101
- Make sure that the tuba part is prominent and is played accurately
2. Main theme
- Make sure that trumpets and flutes are heard on the quarter notes
- Counting exercise on syncopated part
- Keep the tempo consistent by bringing out the accented notes
Blazing Bones
1. Counting exercise with main theme
2. Tell them to make a “rehearsal number” at 53 and 105
3. Transition going into 55 (start 2 before then 47)
4. Transition going into 105 (start 2 before)
- Make sure that the students are watching for the tempo change

Frogs
1. Beginning: make sure clarinets are all playing together
- Keep 8th notes clean
2. Keep consistent tempo consistent in measures 56-66
3. Work on the transition from 75 to the end
- Start a few measures before
