Teacher’s Prayer

Oh most gracious heavenly father,

Thank you for everything that you have given to us.

Lord, help me to teach with Wisdom

In order for me to shape the minds of the young ones.

Guide me that I may be able to teach them

and to nurture them to become a better person

with good moral values.

Lord, encourage me to do my best

in order for my students to learn from me.

Please Lord, guide these young ones

so that they can give their best

and they will go into the right path.

Amen
Teaching Philosophy
I believe that a role of a teacher is to foster learning of his/her students.
The learning of the students takes place in different ways. Some students learn by
just absorbing the lesson of a teacher, some students learn by how they motivate
by the teacher, some students learn by reading the book or hand outs. In order
also for the students to learn, there should be conducive, safe atmosphere inside
the classroom. To cater the differences of the students, the teacher should
create or use strategies that are appropriate to the needs of each and every
student. The teacher should also give interest to the lesson and have passion to
teach in order for his/her students to participate and willing to learn about the
lesson. As a teacher, I will make sure that the things that I inculcate to my
students are very meaningful to their lives.

As a future teacher, teaching students is very important because it will be

able to change the lives of the student’s not just their status in life but also to
become a better person with good moral values.

Demand for Reading Proficiency:

A Challenge in the 21st Century

Ethel de Leon – Abao, Ed.D.

Professor V
Cebu Normal University

A wise man once said: “The man who reads well is the man who
really thinks well; he has the basis for opinion and has developed good
judgment.” Today, reading is more important than it was yesterday. As F.
Alexander puts it, as the world has become more complex, reading is
increasingly important for children trying to find their places in it. Despite
the vast technological advancement which brought about various angles
of changes, a number of options have been made available; hence
teenagers and adults seemingly degenerated in their passion and skills to
read. Ignorance in today’s world doesn’t only refer to those who lack
knowledge but also to those who never dare to read especially on issues
of utmost concern. Rosebelle (2001). In fact, Richek (2000) noted that the
lack of reading skills among a large number of young adults threatens to
divide society deeply between the highly literate and the low – income,
low – achieving underclass. Generally, children feel that reading is so
difficult that their ability to understand and explore new ideas is hindered.
Researched shows that this can be traced to their literacy
experiences, effects of various approaches to instruction with different
groups of children. A substantial segment of the population has some
form of linguistic and auditory processing weaknesses. Although these
weaknesses can be identified, much stronger underlying skills lead to
better ways of reading. Experience – wise, these students are greatly
disadvantaged because home background doesn’t motivate them to
develop their love for reading. Primarily, the parents who are supposed to
be their child’s first mentors can hardly read. Biologically, Dr. Wilburn
commented that many children become frustrated and find reading
difficult because they don’t have the cognitive skills required to process
information properly. In fact, for additional schoolwork not specifically
addressing underlying cognitive skill weaknesses simply compounds the
frustration and intensifies reading problems. Instruction – wise, she added
that teachers should help kids become better readers by matching them
with the right kind of books at the right time.

Richek (2000) likewise shared that society suffers when citizen

cannot read adequately. People with low reading levels comprise mainly
the unemployed High school dropouts, the poor, and those convicted of
crimes. The problems of our schools, the growth of poverty and the loss of
family values all show some association with poor reading. If not helped,
COLLEGE OF
[PHINMA CAGAYAN DE ORO COLLEGE] EDUCATION

those children according to Peterson (2009) are handicapped for life by

their poor reading. Hence the aforementioned program has used a
variety of techniques to make reading, not only learning task but a fun –
filled classroom activity so that learning becomes meaningful and lasting.

In this time and age, a vicious cycle brought about by

technological advancement and man’s desire to attain perfection, has
added to the sad reality that reading has seemingly become a passé.
Many thought- why read, when computers give them wide range of
information at the tips of their noses? Yes, this harsh phenomenon has
added a greater challenge on the part of the educators particularly in
the 21st century. While it’s true that lots of information is made available by
certain technological devices, there are still a number of reasons why
people need to read.

Villamin (1998) said that 80% of our daily activities involve reading. In
the book Introduction to Learning Disabilities she states that reading has
become nearly essential for adult employment: it is a necessity for
obtaining a degree as well as gaining young and adult privileges. In
addition, the act of and the love for reading can lead towards
meaningful communication. In the same manner, reading being a life skill
can guide/ lead children and adults to understand life better and
eventually make them critical and creative thinkers. In fact, research
shows, that children and teens who read have higher IQ’s, is more
creative, does better in school and gets higher paying jobs. With this note,
an apparent demand for reading should be met so that everyone has a
chance to cast off poverty in order to live happily and meaningfully.

The aforementioned statements obviously posit signals that the

academe as well as the community has lots to offer in helping students
attain reading proficiency. Most researchers now call for a balanced and
integrated approach to instruction and for teachers to tailor instruction to
the changing needs of the times. Likewise, parents can monitor the child’s
development closely and share any concerns with the child’s school. Both
parents and teachers must also expose children to various forms of
children’s literature for creative thinking. Community members as well,
can contribute by volunteering their time, talent and resources to help
kids who are struggling to read and conduct enhancement activities to
those who are not. Kowalczyk (1985) further suggested that all should set
aside one – half hour a day to do some reading and it won’t be long
before they fall in love with it.

As Mclead (2008) avers, reading is the most readily accessible and

rewarding of all leisure time activities. During this precious moment the RIF
Parent Brochure noted that as one reads, he/she becomes an expert on
COLLEGE OF
[PHINMA CAGAYAN DE ORO COLLEGE] EDUCATION

any subject one likes; have a few laughs by sitting down with
reading materials by a favorite another, and enjoy the art of reading and
digesting; see the world – without leaving the room, one can visit places
that fascinate him/her and explore near frontier of life; use one’s brain by
solving a mystery figured out in the reading materials; get some free
advice by checking out certain section where problems and solution are
therein noted; discover new interests by developing something, one knew
nothing about before; find a cause by getting smart on issues that
concern people and organization; escape by leaving noise, tenseness
and boredom behind as one reads a book; and grow up. It is believed
that any individual who grows up and becomes a good source of
information, eventually becomes a productive citizen. To gain more
access to these, this statement bears a positive note that the progress of
science and technology has indeed made reading a steadfast guide in
making education a potent means towards globalization.

chance to cast poverty in order to live happily and meaningfully.

The article entitled “The Educational Value of Field Trips” by Jay P. Greene,
Brian Kisida and Daniel H. Bowen is all about how field trips produced civilized
young men and women who appreciate the arts and culture. It also stated in this
article that enriching field trips contribute to the development of students into
civilized young men and women who possess more knowledge about art, have
stronger critical – thinking skills; exhibit increased historically empathy, display
higher levels of tolerance, and have a greater taste for consuming art and
culture.

For me, the author’s view of field trip is very nice and it really helps the
students to develop their skills but there are some schools who can’t afford to
have field trips especially to those schools in the rural areas. But as a future
teacher despite of this problems we need to be flexible in teaching our students
in order for them to learn even though they were not experienced what field
trips looks like.

Critique Paper #5

The article entitled “Reading Fluency Viewed as Neglected Skills” is

an article stating that some people felt that reading fluency is a
complicated problem. For Mr. Rasinski, fluency problems can stem from a
number of factors. Some students lack fluency because they’re still
struggling with decoding words. He said also that proficient readers
“hardly ever stop to sound out words. But readers who are still in the
sounding – out phase “use up cognitive energy doing that, and they
don’t have much left reading automaticity. It also stated here that other
students don't have enough sight words—words that they recognize as quickly as
their own name—to read fluently. Still other students lack fluency because
they're not connecting meaning to the words they're reading. "You can tell they
do not understand what they're reading by the way they're reading it," said
Kristina Phelan, a teacher who works with struggling readers in grades 1-3 at
Mahala F. Atchison Elementary School in Tinton Falls, N.J. According to the
National Reading Panel’s 2000 report, “Fluent readers are able to read orally with
speed, accuracy, and proper expression.” Some experts, however, argue that
speed as a goal can lead to bad practice. Instead, students should be
encouraged to read at a “conversational” rate or one that allows them to
comprehend a particular text.

This article reminds us that reading fluency is not just reading with speed,
accuracy and proper expression but the reader should understand what he or
she is reading. As a future teacher, it is my responsibility to teach my student how
to read and understand what they are reading.

Reflection #4

What happened? What did I feel? What did I learn?

I was reading an article I felt sad because the I learned that reading
entitled “Reading students who can read fluency is not just reading
Fluency Viewed as with speed and have with speed, accuracy
Neglected Skills”. It is an proper expression are not and proper expression
article stating that some learning what they are but reading is how the
people felt that reading reading. The important is students understand or
fluency is a complicated they understand what comprehend what he/
problem. . It also stated they are reading. she is reading.
here that other students
don't have enough sight
words—words that they
recognize as quickly as
their own name—to read
fluently. Still other
students lack fluency
because they're not
connecting meaning to
the words they're
reading.
