TLE-SMAW
Grade 10
“Types of Welding Power Source (Electricity)”

COMPETENCY
Perform proper setting of welding machine according to manufacturer’s manual.

SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES:
At the end of the lesson, the students should be able to
1. Define Welding Power Source.
2. Identify the types of welding power source.
3. Illustrate types of welding Power Source.

CONTENT:
Types of Welding Power Source (SMAW)

Materials: White Board, White Board Marker, Pictures

Reference: google.com

PRIOR KNOWLEDGE
Students may be thinking that:
1. Welding machine has different types of Welding Power Source.

NEW KNOWLEDGE:

Students must realize that

1. In welding, the three types of Welding Power Source are Direct
Current (DC), Alternate Current (AC) and combination of
Alternate Current and Direct Current (AC/DC)

INTRODUCTION

Teacher’s Activity Student’ activity

Greetings!
Good morning Class! Good Morning Sir!

Class, please arrange your chairs and Yes, sir.

check your classroom if there are any
hazards or not comfortable.

Please sit down. Thank you sir!

Quotes for the day:

“Knowledge will give you power, but
character will give you respect”

Motivation:
The teacher will present different pictures
and allow the students to give their own
interpretation on the pictures based on the
questions that the teacher will be asking.)
1. What is your observation on the first
picture?

Sir, I observe I the picture a

cartoon character showing his
power.

2. What does the second picture

represent?

Sir, the second picture shows

towers that give us electricity.

3. What comes into your mind when you

see the third picture?

It shows a welder using a welding

machine.

Very Good!

Thank you class for your answers.

The three pictures show power sources.

Presentation/Discussion:
Okay class, let’s start our discussion.

Sir, It is the power source of

Class, We must have a basic
understanding of electricity to understand Welding machines.
welding.

What is electricity?

Ok, very Good!

Electricity is the flow of tiny particles

called electrons through a conductor.

In the definition of electricity, it involves the

electrons and conductor.
Electron is negatively charged
What is electron?
particles.

What is conductor? A conductor allows the flow of

electrons
What is Voltage?
It is a measure of electrical pressure.
 Most welders operate on a 220
volt source.
 A welder changes the 220 volt
pressure to a lower pressure
between 15 and 25 volts.

What is Resistance?
Resistance is what causes the electric Resistance is the opposition to the flow
energy to be transformed into heat. of current in a circuit.
 When electricity is through a
conductor, the movement of electric
energy heats the conductor due to
the resistance of the conductor to
the flow of electric current
 The higher the amps setting, the
greater the heat produced. more
resistance

TYPES of CURRENT
 When electrical current alternates
or reverses the direction of electron
flow it is called alternating current
(AC).
 Alternating Current (AC) – An
electrical current having alternating
positive and negative values.

DIRECT CURRENT
 Electron flow in one direction

– When the electrons flow from

the electrode to the work
piece it is straight polarity .It
is called DIRECT
CURRENT STRAIGHT
POLARITY.

– When the electrons flow from

work piece to the electrode it
is reverse polarity.It is called
DIRECT CONTROL
REVERSE POLARITY
(DSRP)
In welding, selection of suitable type of
power source for different welding
processes has also been described

Very Good Class!

Activity:

The students will work independently and

1. WELDING CURRENT
they will be given jumbled written words; 2. ALTERNATE CURRENT
they will arrange it and decide if the given 3. DIRECT CURRENT
words are types of Welding Current.
4. COMBINATION AC/DC
 TNERRUC GINDWENG 5. RESISTANCE
 NATEALTER TNERRUC
 TCERDI TNERRUC
 NOITNAIBMOC CD/CA
 ENATCSISRE

ANALYSIS:
(The teacher will present pictures and ask
if the picture is a diagram of Direct Current
or Alternating Current.)
1.

2.

ABSTRACTION None Sir.

Okay do you have any question regarding our
discussion?
Yes, Sir.
Are you sure?
(students raise their hands)
Okay it seems you all really understand, so to
sum it up can you give me the different types
of Welding current?

APPLICATION
The students will group into five. Each group
have 5 members. They will create a hymn or a
song about the welding power source. Each
hymn or song has 3 minutes only.

EVALUATION:
In ¼ sheet of paper, define each word:
1. Electricity
2. Electron
3. Direct Current
4. Alternate Current
5. Resistance

Assignment:
In your notebook, research about set-up welding accessories.
