book to learn fromBy Mark A. WeaverFirst some background, I have taken two YYS7gqrCH
Structural Dynamics courses during the course of my academic career. The first Uf2QbiHsO
course I took used this book as the course textbook. I can honestly say I learned Xh73lNQKL
absolutely nothing from this book (at that time). This book DOES give very DvjAiwmHM
detailed derivations of how it gets from point A to point B, however for those of GnGGQ7WuE
us who have forgotten most of our linear algebra, (about 90% of practicing iQkQY4P1f
structural engineers from my experience), this approach is not ideal. Fortunately I
had the opportunity to retake the course and this time with "Dynamics of
Structures" by Anil K. Chopra. Chopra's book is far easier to read, employing a
more conversational style, and does a much better job of giving you a "gut
feeling" for the topic.Bottom line: Anyone who doesn't already understand
dynamics of structures at a fundamental level should first learn the subject using a
less mathematically rigorous approach such as that found in Chopra's textbook.
After achieving a reasonable level of competence with dynamic behavior, you
should move to Hart and Wong's book, as it DOES include much more
mathematical detail and some more advanced topics that Chopra's book does not
include. Together, these two books are all you'll ever need to understand the
topic!2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Excellent TextbookBy
JohnEasy to understand and simple to read. Includes lots of good examples which
are helpful to understand the concepts. The theoretical equations are logically
derived. It is one of the few textbooks that focues on dynamics only, while others
jump between dynamics and statics (which makes the learning process more
confusing and difficult).0 of 0 people found the following review helpful.
Excellent BookBy Abbas MoustafaOne of the best books on structural dynamics.
The book contains all necessary material for building computer codes for linear
and nonlinear analysis of structures under earthquake loads. It also contains
several solved numerical examples.
