Dimensioning

Indicating the size of the object in the drawing is called dimensioning. It can be
numerals, lines, symbols and notes. Dimensioning should be as per IS -11669
-1986.

Dimensioning include extension line, dimension line, leader line, arrow head or
oblique stroke or a point.

Placing of Dimensions

1. Method 1 or Aligned system

2. Method 2 or Unidirectional system

Method 1 or Aligned system –


1. In this method dimensions line should be in parallel with object line.
2. All dimension values are placed above and near the middle of the
dimension line
3. Dimension value should not be marked by breaking the dimension line.
In this system all dimensions are so placed that they may be read near from
the bottom or the right hand edge of the drawing sheet.

3. Unidirectional system- In this system all the dimensions are placed in such
a way that they can be read out from the bottom edge from the drawing
sheets. Dimension lines are broken in the middle for inserting the
dimension.

Rules of dimensioning
1- Every dimension must be given but nun should be given more then once.
2- Dimension line should not cross each other.
3- Hidden line should not be used as dimension line.
4- Dimension should be given outside the view unless they are clear and
more easily read inside.
5- Arrow head should be pointed and completely filed in.
