Experiment # 1
Slider and Crank Mechanism

Objective:

To investigate the motion of the crank and slider.

Apparatus:

Crank and Connecting rod apparatus

Fig 1.1: Crank and Connecting rod apparatus

Theory:

A slider crank mechanism is an apparatus that is used to convert the linear

motion to rotatory motion or to convert rotatory motion to linear motion.

The mechanism is composed of three parts i.e. the crank which is the rotating
disc, the slider or the piston which slide inside the cylinder and the connecting rod
which connect the crank and the slider.

As the slider moves it pushes the connecting rod which in turn rotates the crank
. when the piston or the cylinder moves from one end to the other, the crank rotates
through an angle of 180 degrees and when the slider comes back to its original position
the crank covers a complete rotation of 360 degrees.
The slider crank mechanism is used in internal combustion engines, steam
engine, pimps, compressors and block feeders.

Fig 1.2: Slider Crank Mechanism

Procedure:

1. Firstly, all of equipment for experiment of slider crank is make sure all
complete.
2. The angle of the circle is set to 0 degree and the piston at 0 degree.
3. The angle of the circle is twist at 20 degree and the movement of the piston
result is taken.
4. After that, we twist the angle of the circle at 40 degree and take a result. We
will be doing these steps with the increasing the angle of the circle to 20
degree.
5. At the 180, piston is moving to the front, then at the 210-degree pistons moving
to the back.
6. Finally, at 360-degree piston will moving to the back side and we also set a
result equal to 0 degree.
7. All the result we got will fill in the table to make the graph.

Conclusion:

The graph obtained after taking the reading between linear position and degree
give is a sinusoidal. It shows us the mechanism of the slider and the crank. When the
crank moves from one side to another at 180 degrees the length is miniimum and it is
maximum at 360 degrees.
