In its broadest sense remote sensing is the measurement of some property of an object by using means other than
direct contact through the observer's senses of touch, taste or smell.

In its more restricted (operational) meaning remote sensing

refers to gathering information form great distances and over broad areas, usually through instruments mounted on
aircraft or orbiting space vehicles.
