GUIDELINES FOR THE NEEDS ANALYSIS

These are the steps involved in conducting a needs analysis.

1. Target Situation Analysis


• Learners, genres, tasks, activities using English, genre
knowledge & skills** (necessities)
1. Why is the language needed?
2. How will the language be used?
3. What will the content areas be?
4. Who will the learners use the language with?
5. Where will the language be used?
6. When will the language be used?

2. Present Situation Analysis


• Previous learning experiences, language proficiency,
cultural information; Means analysis – resources, time,
physical environment, etc. (lacks)
1. Why are the learners taking this course?
2. How do the learners learn?
3. What resources are available?
4. Who are the learners?
5. Where will the ESP course take place?
6. When will the ESP course take place?

3. Learning Situation Analysis


 Reasons for attending course and expectations, attitude to
English, preferred ways of learning, styles, strategies (wants)

4. CONCLUSION
 Pedagogic needs analysis. Decisions which groups
together Lacks, wants, and necessities.
