Since the Stonewall Riot in 1969, gays and lesbians have been more
aggressive in asserting their own rights and representing their images on literature
and media which had been more or less stereotyped by heterosexual perspective.
Even though there have been several gay playwrights who wrote about the plights
of gay men living in a heterosexual society, Tony Kushner seems to be the most
accomplished homosexual playwright who achieved both critical and popular
acclaim by winning the Pulitzer Prize with his play Angels in America. Likewise,
Hollywood, which had been reluctant in accepting frank depiction of gay sexuality,
has witnessed the explosion of gay romantic comedies for the last fifteen years or
so. The fruition of this trend was the spectacular success of Brokeback Mountain
by Ang Lee which was nominated in the eight categories in the Academy Award
and grabbed three Oscars in 2006.
This paper aims to compare and contrast differences in gay representation in
theatre and film. Angels in America, written by a gay playwright, conveys strong
and authentic messages based on the experience of the playwright himself. It deals
not only with the agony and plights of gay men living in neo-conservative society
of Reagan administration, but also historical, political, racial, religious issues
involving wide spectrum of multicultural America. Even though this play now
belongs to the canon of contemporary American drama, its topicality focusing on
the political context of Reaganite America loses its validity in the new millenium
