Running the Crosstabs option in SPSS

 Let’s say you want to run a two-way chi-square. To do this in SPSS you need to
use the Crosstabs option. To bring up the Crosstabs window…

o Click Analyze  Descriptive Statistics  Crosstabs

o Now you’ve got the Crosstabs window. You now need to specify which
variable is going to correspond to the rows of your table of frequencies
and which one will correspond to the rows. It doesn’t make any difference
for determining the value of chi-square.

o Let’s say you put your cell phone use variable in the Row(s) box and the
stop at the stop sign variable in the Column(s) box.

o Click the Statistics button. Check the Chi-square option. Click Continue.

o Click the Cells button. Make sure that the Observed, Expected, Row,
Column, and Total options are selected. Click Continue to go back to the
Crosstabs window.

o Click OK.

 Now you’ve got an Output Window to look at. The table contains the same kinds
of information we talked about in class. It’s got the observed and expected
frequencies for each cell and it’s got the row and column totals.

 Our result for the value for Pearson Chi-Square is in the top row of the table at
the bottom of the output. Chi-Square is displayed in the Value column. The
number of degrees of freedom for the test is displayed in the df column just to the
right.
